Camping in Eastern Arkansas?

I am putting together a trip for Tinker AFB (Midwest City, OK) to the Nantahala around Labor Day. We paln to make the fifteen hour drive out in one day. But, on the way home I am thinking about splitting the drive into two days. I believe we will try and make it to at least Memphis or eastern Arkansas on the first day. Does anyone have any sujestions on a nice camping (cheap or even better free

) area in this area? Any sujestions are appreciated.
Thanks, Terry DeMoe

I don't know about free but Village Creek State Park seemed nice the one night we spent there two years ago. It's nestled in Crowley's Ridge.

Village Creek is a nice little park with a couple of small lakes just begging for a kayak or canoe angler to fish. There are some lunker bass in them believe it or not. Crappie and catfish too. Better check into it now though. It's a very popular park and may already be full. If you'll be tent camping bear in mind the heat will be oppressive and the skeeters will be aggressive (hey, that rhymes

).

Duece,
You're a poet and don't know it.
Duece is right about the mosquitos. Eastern AR mosquitos are known for their voracious appetites; humans apparently are a delicacy. All I will say is don't forget the Thermocell.

I looked up the other day and saw a couple of skeeters high in the air carrying a Thermocell lantern between them and laughing manically.

The tent, she went up with ease.
DO cobbler was sweet as you please.
I settled in tight
for a miserable night
burning up for lack of a breeze.
I'd just drifted off to my sleep
when I woke with a start to hear shrieks!
They curdled the blood
and I fell with a thud
from my cot and saw millions of beaks!
The terror that seized me was raw
when I gazed unbelieving and saw
that the shrieks up above
weren't from starling or dove
but from skeeters in east Arkansas!

It's not quite east as Forrest City, but the Wattensaw State Game Area with its bayous has some nice primitive camping areas. Skeeters are only as big as puppies.

Dagmar WMA isn't too far off of I-40 and it's free to camp there, but again the vampires will be out in droves.

Hey Luke,
As a teacher of fourth graders, I am always searching for humorous and creative poetry for my students to analyze. Do I have your permission to copy your poem (with your name attached, of course)? We could dissect it for pattern, figurative language, and author's craft. It really is quite cute and something that my kiddos can probably relate to.
Thanks,
Sandy

I would be honored, Sandy. Do you teach at Sherwood?

Luke,
Thanks for allowing me to share your poem. Actually I live in Sherwood, but I teach at Ward Central Elementary in the Cabot district.
Thanks,
Sandy
