New Rain Gauge on the Cossatot Headwaters

While reading the USFS preliminary management alternatives for the Wolf Pen Gap OHV trail system I saw they have installed a rain gauge at High Point Peak.This gauge will be linked to the web in the future but for now it only sends email and texts.I haven't checked into how to access this info,sometimes it takes me a while to find what I want on a goverment website.I found this at http://www.fs.usda.gov/ouachita" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; under Wet Weather Management Protocol.Thought this might be another useful tool for predicting possible stream levels.

That might be a good resource, though I'm not exactly familiar with the location of High Point Peak. High up in the Cossatot watershed? I'd really love to see one in the Crooked Cr. watershed over at Little Mo...

Thanks for the link Fish,High Point appears to be just off Hwy 375 very close to the west ATV trailhead.Just guesstamating from my Forest Service map it looks like 15 to 20 miles upstream from Albert Pike.This would be close to Crooked Creek.

I found HIgh Point Peak at N34.49286 W94.15996, but my guess would be that the gage is not really on the peak, just somewhere near it. Probably located near a road for ease of maintenance, possibly just out of sight to mimize the potential for vandalism. The trailhead mentioned appears to be about 0.6 mile to the west, on the Cossatot watershed, and about 3 to 3.5 miles east of the uppermost watershed for Little Missouri. If someone figures how to get signed up for the e-mail, please share. Radar rain estimates in that part of the state often don't always give a really accurate estimate due to distance from the radar site, so a gage would indeed be a good resource for us.

Judging by yesterday's article in the Fort Smith SWTR newspaper I would expect the local USFS office to be fairly busy in the next few days fielding calls from irate public officials,business owners and OHV riders.
Our local Forest Service will be taking input from the public until 8/24/12 on the changes to the Wolf Pen Trail System management.
I would think easy public access to a rain guage in the upper watershed of the Little Missouri River would be a public safety issue,especially in light of the Albert Pike Campground tragedy.
