Footie: Bailey Creek, CO
Footie: Bailey Creek, CO
Memorial Day Weekend. Bailey Creek. Bailey, CO.
Paddlers: Syd Miller, Justin Payne, and Myself
Water was low (215cfs, I think), but still fun and much better than AR. Big up to Justin for the editing. All GoPro.

Damn, that looks like more fun than it looks, damn.
I don't know if I'll try that last drop piton to surf, but sure got out of it in style.
Great triple drop to begin the video with, Kevin--
btw, did you ever have to wear that t-shirt?
I'll have to watch some more and see if all the slo mos are Justin.
Badass.

I've had more fun on Bailey (and a couple moments of sheer terror) over the years than anywhere else in the country. I think my last run on it was my 9th one and it was just as good as the first - I've never run it at the same level twice. Great footage! I'm just pissed that you didn't invite me.

Jon, thanks for the feedback. My favorite creek for sure.
Fish, I'm definitely going back, great creek. All are welcome :)
Seems that I missed informed you guys. This has a little bit of the Royal Gorge and Boulder Creek as well. The guy getting pinned/slammed at the end was some fellow (Name???) we met a Boulder. Fortunately, I never had to wear the shirt...Justin definitely would have included my bootie beer. :)

How about we head out there for Bailey Fest 2012?

Aug 10 -12, releases guaranteed, lots of people (and rope support)! Plenty of class 4+ fun on Bailey at low/med levels and Foxton and other sections downstream will run too for plenty of class 3 and class 2 action. Bring all your friends!

Re: Footie: Bailey Creek, CO
Baileyfest is a good time for sure! I was out there last year, kegs of beer and plenty of hamburgers at the takeout. I do want to mention that they will crank it up to about 450 cfs for Baileyfest though, which puts the canyon at a solid class V run, but just as Fish mentioned there will be lots of support and ropes. Foxton is always an option with a good class IV boulder garden, but the rest is pretty mellow, and Waterton is a good short III+ creek run with minimal consequences.
I would LOVE to see a huge group of AR boaters at Baileyfest! Keep in mind if you are a class IV boater in AR, you are probably a class III+/IV- boater in the high country due to the elevation, consistency, and mank. If you have paddled out here, you know exactly what i'm talking about. I just dont want anyone to get in over thier heads, but if you got the skills get your full face, elbow pads, and creekboat and bring yo-self to BAILEYFEST!

Re: Footie: Bailey Creek, CO
My first run on Bailey with ARZach was 700+ cfs. We all agreed that felt like a class V level!
I thought that was how Bailey was supposed to be, but found out it's generally quite a bit mellower. 450 does throw a lot of class 4+ at you real fast, but it feels like an optimal level for most rapids. Super Max is impressive at 450... but it's d*mn impressive at any level. If you're on your first Bailey run and you go cruising into Super Max thinking "man, this class V stuff isn't really all that hard," you're about to find out what a bona fide class V really looks like.
And if that doesn't sound like fun, Foxton has some of the coolest 3+ (4-?) water I've ever seen. And you can even skip that for a pure class 3 run that feels more pool drop than most of CO (which is to say it's still more continuous than 90% of Arkie runs). And bring your fat-tire two-wheeler too, cause the Bailey take out at Pine has some of the best mountain bike trails anywhere in the country. Oh, and also some of the coolest no-fee camping up the road from Pine in the middle (literally) of the big granite domes, but I bet it's gonna be a mad-house on the fest weekend!
Fun times,
Fish
