Ultimately it was none of my business other than a general concern for the safety of other drivers so I wished them luck and hit the road. I would have carried the kayak for them but I was going the other way, so I was just wondering if anyone knew whether they got where they were going ok.

I'm just curious. Does anyone know how the folks who were trying to carry an old Buffalo canoe and a kayak on top of a Subaru wagon came out? The canoe looked like one of those old Coleman Ram-X boats (said Buffalo on it though?) with an interior aluminum skeleton and they had it loaded gunwales up in hopes of putting the kayak on top of it. It was going as well as one might expect. The hull was dented severely, and they just kept pulling and pulling on straps and denting it deeper and deeper but the boat was still rocking side to side on the rack. I begged them to flip the boat over and find room for the yak in the back of the car (hatchback) or simply make two trips as they were "only going ten miles". They agreed that either of those options would be better and safer, thanked me for the advice, then proceeded to pull on the straps some more.
