WTB 14'-16' Royalex Canoe

Post by Matt'yak » Wed May 23, 2012 1:57 pm

Looking for a canoe, lightly used, no wider than 36". I know there are a lot of boats out there that are not posted on CL, that is the largest media that I have been doing my searching for local boats. If anyone knows of a boat make with Royalex or lighter boat please let me know, for there are sever people who do not use CL.

Some makes that I am familiar with...Mad River (Explorer 15, Angler 14, etc), Old Town, Two Brothers, Wenonah....etc.

Styles looking for: Tripper, Down River, Versetile, General Touring...I have two little girls who might go with me from time to time.

Just want to thank everyone on the message board, over the years, everyone has been so helpful with Q&A and I have enjoyed all the paddles with many different folks.

Matt, I'd advise against an Arkota. Don't get me wrong. The boats are as great as the guys making them, but having paddled an Arkota I just don't really like the shallow arch hull for little ones. For the kind of use you envision you'd be better off with something like a MR Explorer in my humble opinion. Very versatile and great for kids (the main reason I finally decided on one) because of its very good initial stability, and I've found the secondary to be really good too. I think you'd be really happy with one for your purposes, and if I turn out to be wrong you'll have no trouble unloading it. There are others on here who have forgotten more about canoes than I'll ever know, but I think it's hard to beat an Explorer for all around use, especially with young'uns in the mix.

Also, FWIW, I've always been opposed to buying new boats, but the guys at OMTC were so helpful, patient and fun to work with I bought a brand new one from them earlier this year. I highly recommend stopping by there since you're in their hood. They have both of the aforementioned boats and can really help you make the best decision even if you don't buy one from them.
You come too.
