buffalo river may28.thru june 1

Post by 10below » Fri May 18, 2012 11:08 pm

Hey everyone

Some friends and I are looking into canoeing the buffalo may 28 thru june1. Ive heard the water is extremely low. Has anyone canoed it recently? How much walking was involved? How long is the actual trek? Are there different starting/ stopping points? How long is the buffalo and are there any surrounding rivers with a higher water level? Any other tips you can offer would be greatly appreciated. My buddy set this up but I have more time to research. I really don't want to pull my canoe for 40 miles....

Thanks a lot

This http://ar.water.usgs.gov/buffaloriver/ should be a good source for you, as it gives high, low and recommended levels. Right now is a good time to hike down the length of the Buff.

Wash your car, maybe something will happen.

we floated (scraped down) from Hasty to Carver (4 miles) on Saturday.
I wouldn't reccomend that section until we get some good rain.

We did the stretch from Hwy 14 (dillard's ferr) to Rush on Saturday. Doable, lots of paddling. Had to get out a couple of times, didn't have to drag very far.
Lots of canoes! Weekdays I'm guessing it would be pretty empty of people.

You might consider Maumee to Rush. That could easily take couple of days due to slow river speed.

Chad, because of its pool-drop nature you will have pools to paddle, just no flow to speak of. And of course the drag thru the shoals to the next pool. Where will you be driving from? Given the current levels, there may be better alternatives depending on where you will be driving from.
