I'm excited to announce that we are going to try something at this years WW school. We are going to hold a combined class for kayakers interested in trying out canoeing, and to introduce people to the shorter (<10') plastic canoes that are starting to take over the open canoe world.
For kayakers who are comfortable running Upper Richland at midnight under a new moon with one hand tied behind their back, C1 or OC1 may give you a whole new thrill on the 'Tot. For mere mortals, Open Canoe may be an opportunity to be challenged on Arkansas rivers that run much more frequently. The idea is to help people see the similarities and differences, in a fun POSITIVE class.
Short plastic boats like the Prelude and Spanish Fly changed what people thought was possible in open canoeing with their design in 2000. Over the following years, companies such as Mohawk and Esquif introduced high-performance royalex sub-10-foot boats as well. With the introduction of the Esquif L'Edge, Blackfly Option, and the much-anticipated Mohawk Pheind, what had been a slow change has exploded into a revolution. This class will be an opportunity to try out a sub-10-foot boat, compare it with longer boats, learn the tradeoffs, and how these shorter boats change your paddling style.
If you are interested in signing up for either of these classes at WW school, you can go to the registration page at http://www.arkansascanoeclub.com/Defaul ... eId=543452" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; In the "Special Request" Field of the application, type "crossover" or "short boat" for the two classes respectively. The plan right now is to run these classes as a single group, but if they are popular, we will split them into separate classes.
Thanks!

Any idea on dates Canoe School Instructors will get class information so they can contact their students? I have material to send to my class that they will need time to review before canoe school?

Dave,
Registration is officially closed, and we will be sorting students as soon as someone (erm, me) gets the student data formatted and distributed to the right people. Soon, I hope!!!
Kayakmamma,
I suspect that you are not the only one who is teaching that might be interested. I have had several other people also express an interest in this, but no one has specifically signed up for the crossover class. I'll probably give it one more try before we call this idea DOA... /:)
Thanks,
Paul
