My name is Joe Crowley and I am a graduate student and avid paddler at Ohio University. I am conducting my thesis research on barriers to participation in whitewater kayaking and the techniques used to negotiate around them. Although women are a rapidly growing demographic within whitewater paddling, their numbers are not translating equally across all degrees of boating (Class I-V).

I interviewed 12 elite female kayakers and developed a list of barriers and techniques they have used to continue participation within the sport.

I am looking for paddlers of all ability levels, men and women (especially), to take this survey. The survey should take about 15 minutes and I greatly appreciate your participation.

I did post it on Mountainbuzz as well as boatertalk a few weeks back and was met with some lovely tidbits. I'll take the advice and input of PhD's over local park and huckers but, all of that aside, a few responses did come out of it and to those that participated I appreciate their input.

I'll let you know if I can swing a trip down. I plan on doing a sizable amount of paddling in WV assuming I can get out from behind this computer for a weekend here or there.

Hey Joe I'm working in W.Va. actually here more than I'm home . Would love to paddle with ya. I don't really know where anything is up here . I am trying to set something up for mid april but I don't have my kayak with me and all the commercial companies don't start up until may. I'm going to be here with 16th , 17th , 18th , and 19th of april off . Since I've only got 4 days I'm not going home . If you're available or can give me any ideas let me know . I want to go to gauley but I'm not up for class 4 . There's gotta be something there I could run . I'm about half way between New Martinsville and Morgantown . Changing the subject I can't wait for the Sooners to come up to Morgantown . I might even paint my face . Ha

There is a facebook page called WV creek visuals where people post levels and coordinate trips.

Personally I would recommend the Cheat (narrows and gorge) sections (III to IV-) and the Lower Yough (III). They are about an hour and a half from where you are and are two great class III sections as the lower yough can be looped if you take out at the Railroad Bridge and walk the easy 1/3 mile back to the put in and both see a decent amount of traffic. I won't be able to make it out during the week but you shouldn't have too much trouble finding people.
