Homemade pigtail?

Post by kayakmamma » Mon Mar 05, 2012 9:41 pm

Could I just make a pigtail to attach to a rescue PFD with a locking biner and some nice specrta rope and a couple of fancy knots? (I might have to get Larry for the knots). Not impressive per say, but serviceable?
How long should it be? Thank you!

sure, just measure out the right length to fit your setup.

The problem is keeping the rope or hoopie tape close to the vest to reduce chances of it snagging on something.

They are relatively cheap, just look around and you can get one made up commercially that has some sort of mechanism to keep it tight on your side. Most have some type of shock cord sewn inside the hoopie tape to keep it tight to your side but expand out.

I like mine just long enough to clip into a kayak bow or a paddle shaft for rescue tows. But, have used mine with a belay rope assist to do some rescue work where I did not want to fall into the water.

your choice, but I recommend you look around and buy one that is made for your pfd.
