Guide Recommendations White River Trouts!

Post by GN YAKN » Sat Mar 03, 2012 5:52 am

Planning on visiting the White River area over Spring Break. Wanting the wife to experience a guided trout fishing trip, shore lunch, the whole shebang.

Have used Gaston's and Cotter guides before but that was almost 20 years ago. Checked pricing this week and received one quote of close to $300 for the day. :wht:

Any recommendations or suggestions for something more in line with a school teacher's salary?

Thought we might visit Mountain View for some extra cultures.

Breaux Dave, give Anglers White River Resort a call. Looks like they got a rate of $190 for two people for a day. Not sure if that includes a shore lunch.

Dave, generally speaking the $300 a day guides cater to fly anglers (and those who want to try fly angling). If you and the Mrs. fit either of those categories check with Davy Wotton. Otherwise, were I you I'd just do my own thang. Trout fishing isn't rocket surgery. I've been fishing that part of the river for over thirty years and will be happy to give you all the info you need to catch some little pink fish. If you still want a guide the folks at Anglers are mighty nice and will supply you with anything from a long skinny john boat and ten horse to a full day with guide I believe. Hit me up if you want me to ramble further.
You come too.

If you are not locked into the White, you're welcome to come over to the Little Red where you have a place to stay at no cost. Lots of big and little trouties here! Mountain View is only an hour or so away. Mi casa es su casa.

Plus, Kim can cook a pretty good meal to order if needed!!! Or I can. It's all good!

Dave, I highly recommend Little Red Casa. And the eggs are organic and fresh. Uh, Spring Break? I think Kim will be trailbuilding on the Buffalo.

I really enjoyed the B&W photos in Ken Smiths first Buffalo book about the guided fishing trips on the White and Buffalo back then. The gentlemen sitting/fishing from deck chairs arranged in the flat bottomed boats while the guide paddled, and especially the shore lunches of fried chicken the camp steward/commisary man was fixing on the gravel bar. It must have been 'the life of Riley', I certainly would have enjoyed that!

Friend Wally, who is a long-time fisherman, mentioned another guided trip he was on on the White once years ago where the guides fried a pound or two of bacon and made BLTs for everyone to 'snack on' while the guides were cleaning the mornings catch for the main course; Potatoes&onions and fresh fish, all fried in hot bacon grease :D That's what I'm talking about!

Good info, thanks! Will check out the suggested outfitters and give an update if/when the trip comes off! Spring Break plans are still in the formulating stage at this point and changing hourly!

Have to clarify one thing, however. Reason for seeking a guided trip is to make sure there is a third party that will work with the spouse. Want her to have an enjoyable experience and still be speaking to me at the end of the day! (In her defense, it is me and not her that is the problem!)

Sometimes having a third party that can be a little more patient is worth $300!!! Doesn't hurt that they also have a boat with a motor that will start, fishing gear that works and can cook! Win, Win, Win, & Win!

I'd rent a boat, buy some yeller power eggs, split shot em' and have a blast. If you drift fish and match your weight to the speed of the boat, you will catch little rainbows all day no matter where you are on that river. If the boat is moving faster than the bait take a split shot off, and vice versa.

Cant remember last time I went and didnt catch my limit.

If you wanna know how to catch some big browns....you will just have to shoot me a pm. Cant give that info freely.

Recipe for disaster!!! :poke2: :poke2:  Dave doesn't want to be responsible for this trip!!!! He wants a guarantee for his dollars spent!!

My wife and I have been fishing together for many years and although she's most accomplished with the fishing, there are times when the services of a skilled guide on their familiar river section, their equipment, their cooking, and their time would be just the best fun and more than worth the small expense. A treat for us both. I just wish I knew of a guide service I could recommend personally.

Most likely going to go with the Angler's suggestion. Been trading e-mails and the price looks much more to my liking. Another bonus is that it is really close to Mountain View so we won't have to drive as far.

Thanks for the input everyone!

When I first moved here in the early 1970's, my boss was an avid fly fisherman. One of the perks he got was a weekend guided fishing float on the White River. I was a fly fisherman as well, got lucky and received an invite. It was a two big Jon boats set up for awesome comfortable fishing and one big Jon boat for gear and a cook.

Probably the best fishing weekend ever for me. Totally changed what I thought AR / OK country was like.

Same type deal as described previously. Fishing guides knew the river by heart. We ended up for lunch cooked on a gravel bar (fresh fish and chicken cooked over the open fire). We fished the afternoon away, floated to another gravel bar where old fashioned wall tents were setup. Another open fire to relax around on nice chairs while the steaks were cooked. We fished till lunch and ended up at the take out with our limits in a cooler.

This trip was some 35 plus years ago and I still have memories of the details.

Dave, go for the guide assist and their fishing boat setup. Both will be perfectly set up and will make the trip a memory maker for both of you.

Enjoy! and take some photos for the rest of us to enjoy as well.
