Hurricane Creek/Piney

Post by nproctor » Sat Feb 18, 2012 3:29 pm

Has anyone yak the Hurricane to Piney north of Dover up highway 7? "Hear it was a good float" My question is how long does it take and where would you put-in? And is it worth my time? and if anybody has floated it recently? "Whats the water level".

thanks Nathan

Here's a link to the description of it from the Ozark Creek Information Summary:

It's a great section of river but doesn't run very often or stay up long.

HalfTon just ran it last week. You might PM him if he doesn't see this.

That one's on my short list since backpacking the OHT through there.
Cheers,

Shuttle may be one of the longest in the area. Best bet is to have some angel, bud, goddess, prince, hired driver, or anybody to drop you at the top and your vehicle at the bottom. That is unless you guys have all day, but still start early with shuttle.

Creek itself? Depends on levels and weather since it can change in class depending on flow. Been a group or two that ended up doing overnighters on that run resulting in the S&R teams being called out. Length and remoteness lend to the experience but raises the bar just a bit.

Fun float! Done it twice and the second time the water was about a foot higher. Richland was at 4.5 +/-ft the second time when we ran it. The first few miles are pretty flat until you get in the gorge. Also, there is a tree down that must be portaged that was still there, so watch out for that...The Piney was at 5.5 +/-
