Day float this Sunday somewhere within 3 hours of NWA

Post by Eric Esche » Tue Feb 14, 2012 8:54 pm

My tandem canoe partner, Mary McFann and I are planning on doing a lazy scenic Sunday float trip, (not whitewater) but haven't picked a river or section yet as we are waiting to see what the river levels are like after tomorrow. Probably somewhere on the Buffalo, but could also be interested in the Kings or the lower Elk. I do not know the shuttle for the Kings but would be willing to follow directions or someone else. Think I can find everything on the Buffalo by now. I am willing to carpool over and can bring my trailer to haul up to 6 canoes on the shuttle, but the Pathfinder's back seat gets cramped with more than 3 people and 2 is better for long distances. We would be leaving Fayetteville around 7 or 8AM. Weather is forecast at this time to have a high in the low 50'sF, sunny, and winds around 9MPH from the ESE, gusting to 16 for the Buffalo area. Mary's dog Chloe will be with us most likely, and I will bake something to share.

Anyone interested in paddleing this Sunday for a day float somewhere? I will post where we think we want to go after we see the gauges on Thursday.

Now waiting to see where and how much rain and possible snow fall after Saturday's 6PM forecast and what temperatures do. Last forecast is back to full sun, but temperatures only into 40's and with wind of 5-10MPH.

Have Jim Binn's contact info so far, but warned him we may cancel if too cold for Mary.

Indeed! I have my virgin Rendevous on top of the car (virgin to me, but she used to be a real tart). If it's too cold, I may not feel like getting out either.

I guess it is now official that I am wimping out. I am not going to paddle tomorrow.

Mary and I were out for 4 hours this afternoon cutting landscape timbers, too many roots and rocks, and rebar, while leveling a 40'x4' garden bed, pulling up shrubs, and correcting a drainage problem on her daughter's house and we are both sort of stove up. We were damp and cold and hurting by the end of it, and still need to haul in another load of dirt some other day. We agreed that we would pass on paddleing tomorrow, as it was then still higher in temperature that it would be tomorrow. Guess we have gotten spoiled by the mild winter so far. High in the 40's and driving a few hours on both ends wasn't doing it for us. Sorry if I let anyone down. I did get hold of Jim to let him know.

And a Thank You to Bill Corley for going out with me on Friday on Beaver Lake, so I will not in total withdrawal.

I am also thankful for what a sawzall will do to maple roots, even though it beats you to pieces in the process, after you have dug them out with a pickaxe.

Mary is in good enough shape to regularly unload a very full truck load of compost just before going to work, but she agreed that maybe it would be better to rest up a day before going back to work on Monday.
