Cops called on me :)

So the rain started pouring in Killeen Texas and I decided to go scout the "creek" through town. The video is from 75-100 ft away. The wave was about 35 ft wide and pretty decent. As I hopped out of my blazer to get my gear on some city folk asked if I was gonna get in that. I said hell yeah. After surfing for a good 20min with many people videoing and picture taking (mid Texas isn't very physically active) the 5-0 showed up...three of them! I saw them as I was surfin and stayed in the wave since I couldn't "hear" them yelling get out ;)

One of the officers ran down to the grass and I paddled over to him and he was nearly hysterical as he was asking if I was crazy...it was a class II wave afterall. After I got out and explained kayaking a bit he still couldn't grasp why you would choose to get in the water. So I packed up the hill and 3 patrol cars were waiting. I explained I scouted the section below the wave and had put in about 1/4 mile up. They all kept saying I have no idea what is down river and I could get hurt. They said they had numerous 911 calls saying someone was trapped in the river (I was on a very busy street). Just then the ambulance finally arrived after 3-4 min of chatting with the cops...then the FD showed up a few minutes later. I had to refuse a check up by the EMTs from the ambulance as they thought I was hurt? The cops waved off the FD.

One of the cops was saying how can you kayak on this river since it's not a lake? :kayak: I said huh? He could not comprehend being on a river instead of a lake. Anyway, I told them I was going to go scout the other river in town where I found a better wave and got a good hour of quality spins and such in.
He said alright but he might be called in to rescue me and if so I couldn't kayak there either.

Ahh, yes. Ignorance no's know bounds.

Great story!

I'd say that a handy reference material of the water classes would be handy in the glove box. Maybe even a swift water cert or swift water course brochure might be of use.

But then again :problem: Maybe not.

How bout a letter to the local editor OR contact a reporter or two to come watch and take pics and write for you. Could be a complete wake up call for the whole city
And a good reason for folks to take care of the water that you surf in also.

Sounds like when we were kayaking at the Fort Worth, Tx WW park, YES a WW park and the cops and fire department showed up because of multiple calls saying people were drowning in the river.

This is so funny, lol! I remember Robert Bone telling me one time that while kayaking a river, in flood most likely, and I think it was in Austin, that helicopters starting flying overhead and they almost got taken to jail because they had calls that two men were fighting for their lives in the river!!! Ahahhahahahah Bone probably was fighting for his life though, jaja!

I strongly suspect that wasn't the only time Bone almost went to jail. ;) That dude couldn't hardly paddle a lick before he started hanging out with Team Stupid and Horace Sheehat. And now he's poster boy for NOC and a video star. I suppose something good can come out of Texas.

Not to pull out the race card but I felt like I was in a bad buddy cop type of movie. One cop was black and slender...ish and the other was white and john candy with a stache looking.

The black cop joked he was about to send in the white cop after me...I kinda laughed but didn't know if he was saying that since many AAs can't swim or because his partner was super hefty. The other cops stayed in their cars. I was however, surprised that the EMT was rather "in-shape" lookin. I've seen many who were very hefty.
