Self Supported Kayak Trips

Some fun videos from LL to keep you dreaming…and interesting to see their break-down firepan and groover setups and what a GoPro camera can do.

Thanks for the link Rob.

A good tip was packing already waterproof food items (clif bars, freeze dried food packs) individually directly into the kayak hatches - I've always put everything into a bear barrel or some type of drybag - made for a lot of stuff bungeed on deck on my last Red river trip w/ grandson.

One thing I did on that last (a single overnight) trip was to get up early, fill 2 thermoses (thermi?) w/ boiling water to preheat and then filled them w/ hot soup. Was enough for both Mc & me for lunch and dinner. Next time out I may leave the camp table, stove and fuel at home and beg a little hot water for breakfast to make oatmeal.

The PVC pipe groover shown in the Liquid Logic video was pretty cool too.

We did one night on the Buff this year. It was magical!

Can't wait to do it again. In 2012 we're planning to do two nights out of creek boats (boxley to kyles) then, switch to rec boats at kyle's and run a couple more nights.

The stars will have to align just right. :beer2:

jeremy made a really interesting presentation to the Central Chapter some time ago on how he set up a LL XP10 for a 12-day self-supported trip down the Colorado thru the Grand Canyon... I'd watch it again, if he'd put one on!! Crane

Did a Salt River Arizona kayak self support trip some years ago. 5 days 4 nights. Water level too low for rafts but not a problem for kayaks in fact plenty of rapids. One of the river trips that stands out in my memory as a great time. We spent most of the time in camp lazing around in the after noon or doing hikes. It was first of April and the Arizona days were blue sky warm sun cool nights just right for sleeping. Amazing how quickly camp made and broke and meals cooked. It was freeze dry all the way. Amazing how much stuff can be loaded into a creek boat or river runner. Took two of us to get the kayaks to and from the river bank. It was not a problem, after a short get used to it time, to paddle the kayaks. This only works when you can filter the river water. Maybe lost a bit of weight, but that monster Mexican all you can eat meal after the take out put it all back on.

Crane, that presentation by Jeremy was about February '10. It was my first canoe club meeting. And from that point on, I've been sold on LL XP10's. Though I still haven't been able to figure out how he was able to put everything he needed into the kayak.
