Three thousand words
Three thousand words
We are all afflicted with Cognitive Dissonance. The greater our religious, social, financial or political affiliation, the greater the affliction. We hear what we want to hear. We believe what we want to believe. Truth becomes irrelevant.

I especially enjoyed the sliced clorox bottle for bailing the canoe.

Re: Three thousand words
I have always carried a 1gal. Clorox jug in my canoe, cut to scoop-shape, and attached with a lanyard to prevent loss. I did the same with my first "homemade" kayak with no drain, only I used the 1/2 gal model.
As a sign of the times, I used to see Clorox and Purex jugs all up and down the rivers in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s, you could count on picking them up everyehere. Now, I just see wal-mart sacks and lost mesh bags from the outfitters. The plastic cholrine jugs were OK as a stop-gap when melted with a pine knot into the crack in a broken canoe, and still even better used as an eco-friendly bailing bucket. I think the decline of the loose jugs I used to see on the river may be due to the decline of jug-fishing for catfish.

Re: Three thousand words
Some years ago, back when I considered myself a pretty good canoist, I pulled up to the Surfing Hole on the Nanty in my brand new Dagger Ovation. Out on the wave was a yakker who was tearing it up... making it his own!! When he came over to the eddy, he asked if the Ovation was mine. I said yes. He replied that it sure was pretty (it was new and purple and preeeeettttttyy) and asked if he could take it out on the wave. I said sure... He took it out and, just as he had in his kayak, for a loooong time he made the wave his own... spins, side-surfing, back-surfing... his own.
I was impressed! He came back in and I commented that he made it look easy... He replied "anybody with $500 and a little practice can paddle a kayak, but paddling a canoe well is an art form." He was right! Crane

Way back when, I ran the GC with a Bob Foote led group. I took several clinics from Bob back in my solo canoe days and got invited even tho at the time I was paddling a kayak. Watching Bob dance that little solo canoe he was using at the time down the Colorado River was a treat and my opinion a good example of art in motion.

There's really no argument, both types of watercraft are good for different things. Kayaks are better for steep creeking, expedition paddling, playing on small river features, playing on large river features, ducking trees, portaging, and rolling back up if you flip over. Open canoes are better for hauling a lot of weight.
