Instructor certification interest?

Post by Liz Caldwell » Wed Nov 16, 2011 10:50 am

The ACC is gauging interest in holding instructor certification in canoe and/or kayak sometime next spring. It is a rigorous two 3-day weekends of learning, studying, demonstrating skills and testing. But also exhilerating, fun and a great way to give back to the club by teaching at Whitewater School and Rec School.

If you are interested in becoming a Level 3 or Level 4 ACA-certified instructor in canoe or kayak next spring, please email me your:

1. name
2. address
3. best phone number
4. years paddling
5. name and number of someone who can vouch for your readiness

Send to lizcaldwell2000@yahoo.com.

You do not need to commit at this time, just indicate your interest. If you want to know what it takes to be an instructor, visit http://www.americancanoe.org/?page=Instructor_Criteria" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and go to River Canoeing or River Kayaking

So I'm guessing you have to complete Level 1 and Level 2 before attending this class?

no, unless things have changed. Level 3 means certified in moving water, Level 4 is certified to teach in whitewater.

Certifications at Level 1 and 2 are rare... Class content at Level 1 is something like a 1-2 hour introduction to paddling a canoe. Level 3 would be a moving water course like what we do during Recreational School on the Spring, and Level 4 would be teaching at Whitewater school. At the judgement of the instructor trainer, you can receive a lower certification than the maximum if you are not fully up to speed by the end of the process, so it's not an all-or-nothing affair. We could also use a few more canoe participants to make sure that we can justify the class!

Hope this helps,

I believe that Level II would cover the Spring... but we might need Level III or higher to lead a class on the Mulberry... the river levels last year made a higher teaching certification level desirable:) I would probably go ahead and try to up-grade to a Level III, if you have enough folks to make a class.
