DO NOT CLICK ON THE ABOVE LINKS!
They are just commericial sites, and I have no idea if the sites are "safe" to visit or not.
I decided to leave this post up for a few days, just to give everyone some insight into what goes on behind the scenes when many of you are asleep.
This post was one of 4 that went up sometime around 3 AM today from this "new member". (Probably posted from some other timezone.) We're averaging about one similar "attack" per week right now. Users are not warned in these cases; they are simply banned, and their posts are deleted. The posts almost always are gibberish like the above; one theory is that this occurs because something that made sense in some other language has been run through Google translator or some similar program to "convert" it into English.
Another type of attack that occurs is when a new member makes a much shorter post in response to an existing thread. One recent example was when a response drug up an old thread with some simple comment like "that was very informative". Clues were that the new poster offered no additional information or contribution, had a blank profile (no name, no home town, no interests listed, etc), and one more thing: A signature line that linked to a commericial site with no relation to canoeing, kayaking, or rivers. These attacks are much harder to spot, so if you suspect one of those, send a PM to "Global Moderators" and one of us will look into it and take care of the matter appropriately.

Ryan, Thanks from all of us for all you do to keep our website running smoothly. So much of your work is behind the scenes but it wouldn't work without you!

Ryan, is there way to find what IP this crap originates from and then block the IPs of the offenders? I use a IP blocker for home and personal use that is more thorough than most firewalls, and it simply cuts connections with known bad IPs before they establish. Also, that is kinda funny if you read it without the links.

We have the ability to ban by ip, but frankly it does not work well with the abundance of proxy servers out there.

Jon,
IP's are usually "static' or "dynamic", meaning they are dedicated to a particular customer, or assigned as needed/requested by the server or provider, such as every time you log on or changed by routine. Here in Conway, on Conway Corp, IP's are changed every couple of weeks; unless you simply disconnect your cable modem for a few seconds; then you get a new one.
