Fantastic day on the river, where were ya?
Well today was my 3rd and last of this years Buffalo River Clean up.
I think there was two, me included from the canoe club there.
I'm also a Arkansas Master Naturalist of which there were about 20 something of us there.
We split into two groups, one when from Spring (I think) to Hwy 14. The group I went with, from hwy. 14 to Rush, 9 river miles, a long float.
We didn't find tons of trash and that is a good thing. A few tires and such.
A few pics in the link.

That's my most often floated section, 14 bridge to Rush. Thanks to y'all who helped in the clean-up. I was there last year. Would have been there today but I'm in Eminence MO with LouisCov and a bunch of others, for a week of floating spring fed rivers.
Was that little white helper named Chloe, by any chance?
Thanks again for helping keep the Buffalo clean.
Jan
PS You are invited to the litter pickup on Hwy 65 at Cadron Creek. It's Oct 29. If no water to float, will be delayed until mid-November.

DeBo and I hated missing this one, but I had to get up before 4 AM Sunday morning to head in to work, so needed a short-day options for Saturday. That's why we headed down to the White River National Wildlife Refuge for a half-day ribbon-cutting ceremony instead (opening of their new bottomlands interpretative trail).
Eric and I are already plotting ways to tackle the reported 60 tires that are located somewhere between Rush and Buffalo City; I'll keep you posted on that.

Jan - Yes, the little begger of lunches was there helping to hold down the front of my canoe and Mary's seakayak.
It was a great day and a fun trip that most of the ACC missed out on with only 2 chapters represented, not that I am a good representative of my chapter in my cripped up state. Good thing I guess that I did not go with Jan on Lewis's week of rivers. I'm worn out and hurting and had to stop 3 times on the way home to be safe to drive. Susan has said I've fallen alseep 6 times typing this. Make that 7 - found out this morning that it did not post.
Phil - As the tail end charlie's most of the day, Mary and I may not have gotten any tires THIS trip because y'all got the only ones out there, but we each got a pretty full mesh bag of trash and a large PVC pipe that did not need to be there, and that no one else ahead of us found, so we were needed and useful. Mary got as much from her kayak as I did from my canoe, so you might mention that when recruiting boaters who do not paddle open boats and want to use their own kayaks.
That 10 foot 2x2 pole with the fishing net that I carry on these trips proved again to be great for stuff on the bottom of the river that I did not want to swim for. I did not see any trash that we missed, so the river is pretty clean right now on this section. Figured I have gotten my share of tires last week and on previous trips. We haul those out on any trip, whether a scheduled clean up or not. Did find a full beer just above Rush, so these clean ups sometimes do have other unexpected rewards.
When we do the clean up from Rush to Buffalo City is when we could really use a good ACC showing. Early NPS survey reports are that that section has 60 some tires and other garbage to be retrieved. Think it would be great fun to have a fleet of dual canoe barges equipped with troliing motors to let us cover the flat water sections more quickly. I think Cowper has this mode of transport down to a science if anyone wants advice as to how to rig one.
Hope to get to paddle with you again soon.

Love to help with that if I'm able. I have two rigs that would be well suited to that endeavor. I'll keep tabs on the efforts.Cowper wrote:Eric and I are already plotting ways to tackle the reported 60 tires that are located somewhere between Rush and Buffalo City; I'll keep you posted on that.Phil W. wrote:I think there was two, me included from the canoe club there.![]()

Harlan - Fantastic haul. How many members did you get to help you? and from where to where? Hope your weather was as good as ours. Look forward to paddleing with you someday. And eatting - Just picked up a stainless steel 5 gallon pot that is begging for a red beans, wild rice, and Italian sausage break in on a gravel bar somewhere.
