Buffalo River Clean up Sunday 9AM Tyler Bend

Post by Eric Esche » Thu Sep 08, 2011 9:38 pm

Just got this update from Laura Timby

Hi Everyone,

Just a couple more days until the Middle River Pickup & Paddle! Hopefully this beautiful weather will hold. I want to remind everyone to bring water, snacks and lunch, plus wear shoes and clothes that can get wet. If bad weather threatens a change of clothes and a rain jacket would be a good idea as well a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen if its sunny. The river is very low in places and we will probably have to drag through some of the shallow spots as well as wading to get trash. This should make it easier to spot the objects that don't belong in the river! All volunteers will be provided with latex and cotten gloves, plastic and mesh bags for what we gather, and each volunteer will be given a Tshirt provided by the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Foundation, one of our sponsors. This cleanup is part of the Great Arkansas Cleanup. If anyone wants to bring some of their own tools for the cleanup that would be great. Just a few things that can be helpful are shovels, picks, rope, wirecutters, long handeled nets and grabbers.

I have spoken with or emailed all of you so if for some reason you can't make it or are bringing an extra friend or two please email me so we can adjust the number of boats needed. Everyone will be signed up as a Volunteer in the Park(VIP) before the cleanup (this provides workmans comp in case someone is injured in the park) and a safety briefing will be given by BNR staff person. As a NPS volunteer we are asked not to consume any adult beverages while working during the cleanup- so if you don't mind please save the beer for afterwards. If you have any questions or need directions please email me.

I look forward to seeing everyone this coming Sunday at the Tyler Bend Pavillion parking lot at 9am. Its going to be lots of fun!

I forgot to mention in the last email that we will be able to send approximately 16 volunteers up river to do the section from Bakers Ford to Tyler Bend. Water levels are about the same and because we have quite a few volunteers signed up I believe we can cover more of the river. Please let me know if you are interested in this section instead of the Tyler Bend to Gilbert. Thanks, Laura

Eric Esche - ps -I won't be able to make this one as my knee is not rehab-ed enough yet to allow dragging a canoe or wading for trash. Hope someone takes my place and that I will see y'all on the river later this fall.

Thanks for posting this reminder. DeBo and I are planning to go; we could squeeze in at least one, maybe two riders from Conway, but since I have to rig the raft, I should warn that we probably need to be there an hour earlier than the official meeting time...

I will be there Saturday night. I have a boy scout venturing crew from Conway going up Saturday night. As mentioned, they have had enough response that they are now going to do two sections instead of one. The two are Baker Ford to Tyler Bend and Tyler Bend to Gilbert.
Also, Cowper, if you are not already committed to someone or something else, would you mind the venturing crew tagging along with you. I think that would be an incredible experience for them.

BTW I talked to Laura and they are expecting 50 people, more than originally anticipated.
