Unhappy feet - alternative?

Post by David Lewis » Sun Sep 04, 2011 5:15 pm

I bought a used Jackson 4Fun. It came with large Happy Feet. Too large for my Size 13 dogs. I bought small Happy Feet. Still too large. Now I need a smaller alternative. I'm told, "just get some 'foam' and stuff that in the nose." So I intend to do that, but would appreciate some guidance as to what exactly the material is and where to get it. Are we talking about rigid blocks that need to be cut to fit the hull or something soft and squishy that can be easily stuffed into place? Thanks!

Buy a block of 3" thick mini-cell foam. It can usually be found in 1' x 2' pieces. You can then use a key hole saw and a rasp to shape it to fit.

Jackson now sells a foam set that doesn't require cutting or glue. It has layers of foam connected by a cord so you can easily adjust how much foam you want down there. I think Jeremy said he is getting some in soon if he doesn't have them already.

Try it with no foam at all. It is what I do with most kayaks.

Can get a bit rough on your toes if you do a bunch of bow stalls or other front end moves.

I use no foam in my biscuit but in my fun I like the happy feet if adjusted right. Try squeezing them together so its not infront of your feet and you can get more room. Or you can cut open the happy feet bag and take some beans out and then aquaseal it back closed.

I like the happy feet too when they are working/ fitted right.

My problem with happy feet has been failures with the bead part or the air tube into the bead bag.

Here's a how-to video for anyone frustrated or less than happy with their Happy Feet:

David I've got the Jackson block foam to put in front of your boat that I would sell you. I tried it but I like the Happy Feet better. No plans to come to Little Rock anytime soon, though :D
