The big moment comes at gates 23 and 24 when he hits an off-side brace to make that ferry go like it does! Storyline is good as well considering the times he turned. Savage River, Va in 1989 Worlds.

One for the single-bladers!

Pretty impressive. Did he go on to win many other competitions after that?

This was towards the end of his dominance, but his impact goes far beyond his athleticism and skill. There was throw-away line in the video that he built his own boat, paddle, and helmet. He has been a major influence on hull design, primarily in racing C-1, but throughout the whitewater world as well.

You might even say he is the John Kazimierczyk of C-1... :wht:

Beautiful. I'm not a racer, but that doesn't stop me from appreciating that level of precision and perfection, coupled with raw power.

I hope at some point in my life I live somewhere I can slalom race!

Working the slalom gates can only make one a better paddler.

Yes, I agree Roger. I feel the best instruction I ever received was running slalom gates on the Guadalupe river with Mark Poindexter.
I have an opportunity to buy my buddies old C1 slalom boat for cheap. It is a really nice boat. I will have to completely re-outfit it. But I am looking forward the challenge of that. And then of course I will have to learn to C1. Looks like another yaker may be headed to the "dark side!" :D

"kayaker to the dark side?" You're on the dark side, man. Come to the light!
Disclaimer: I have and occasionally paddle a kayak. I do not consider myself a "kayaker". Not that there's anything wrong with that. Call me a paddler!
