Animosity on the message board
Seems like there has been quite a bit of conflict on this boad in the last month. I think Renee hit the nail on the head when she said it was probably because there's no water and everyone's grouchy.
That being said, this is a public urgng for everyone (includng myself) to cool their jets. Bickering doesn't look good for the board, especially to those who don't have a major claim in the issues (there is a difference between bickering and constructive criticism, although it's been hard to tell that recently).
Hopefully someone who's about to post a negative comment will realize what's really important here- meeting people to paddle with, and maintaining those relationships. If you're about to burn a bridge, maybe do it in person from now on. Or at least pm... because I'm not interested in these "well, see if I throw you a rope from now on" comments.
Thanks,
Micah G

Isn't that what message boards are for...The ability to act like someone tough whom you're really not then claim someone hacked into your account if you actually meet someone who calls you on in real life?
I'm still recovering from all summer in CO so I won't be talking the smack for another few weeks :)

Re: Animosity on the message board
That is what Mountainbuzz is for. Although this forum allows for quite a bit of smack talk and general ribbing, generally between pals who are ligitimately only goofing each other, ultimately this is a site maintained, by the ACC, for the ACC. It's fine for a bunch of folks on a purely user-interest board to bash each other all day long because that board doesn't actually go out in public and try and do things under the "Mountainbuzz" name. The ACC does.gannon_w wrote:Isn't that what message boards are for...The ability to act like someone tough whom you're really not then claim someone hacked into your account if you actually meet someone who calls you on in real life?![]()

I'm sure you know this, and were only goofing yourself, but I think a few here have come to believe that this board is the place to air grievances etc. As much as I like friendly ribbing, I don't like dirty laundry being aired in my only reprieve from the daily grind. It can get a bit stinky

Re: Animosity on the message board
Since the recent squabbles on this board, I have heard from a number of members who fully support the club and what we do. The only thing that they are concerned about is the perception of some kind of deep discord in the club. They see this bickering as petty and childish and mean spirited.
I can assure everyone that there is no deep divide in our club. What we are seeing is the discontent of one disgruntled member and a very small group of nonmembers who hate all clubs and would do anything to ruin ours.
We don’t have to respond to this. We allowed ourselves to be drawn into discussing club business which has no place in this forum. At least one of these threads was a clear violation of our guidelines and should have been shut down much sooner. It is difficult for us, like anyone else, not to respond to insults to our integrity.
Our board has spent untold amounts of their own time and money in support of this organization and I stand by the honesty and integrity of every one. All members have an open invitation to join us at board meetings or contact us any time.
People join our club to meet others who love to paddle and love the outdoors. It provides fun events and networking opportunities. We help give people the skills to have more fun safely. We work to ensure that our rivers are conserved for the future and guarantee the right of access to them for all.
I want to thank our members for sticking by us. All organizations go through rough patches now and then. It’s time to move on to more constructive things; not the least of which, is getting out and having fun if you can stand the heat.
And, I want to thank all of those who have responded to the river gage issue. Your comments and ideas are much appreciated!

Re: Animosity on the message board
I first posted on the board last fall looking for beta on a potential float. I was so impressed with the quality and graciousness of the responses I joined the ACC. Since then I've really enjoyed the interaction, and I have been fortunate enough to bum a shuttle on one occasion and am hopeful that my first float trip with fellow ACCers is imminent provided we can work out scheduling. I've regarded the incidences of grumbling (which are comparatively rare) as family spats between people who clearly have great esteem and affection for each other despite the occasional disagreement. Not entirely sure what the point of all my rambling is, I just thought you might appreciate a newcomer's perspective. My fervent hope is that the calendar gods smile on me at Rendezvous time so I can meet some of you guys.DeBo wrote:Since the recent squabbles on this board, I have heard from a number of members who fully support the club and what we do. Maybe I don't know enough about people here in Ark yet but I've not seen much smack talking...Of couse I'm used to mountainbuzz where I think it's also mellow.
My only complaint about this message board is noone posts trip invites. The Ark crews seem pretty tight knit and not very open to inclusion of new group members.
Props to Renee for always inviting me :)
I would like to get out with new crews so invite a solid 4+ er & lets have some fun on the river!

Seems you came in towards the end of several of us leaving the state, and/or monitoring this board. It has been pretty tame lately, but wasn't ever the wild west.gannon_w wrote:Maybe I don't know enough about people here in Ark yet but I've not seen much smack talking...Of couse I'm used to mountainbuzz where I think it's also mellow.

As for trip invites, that's not so much that people are too tight knit to include outsiders. But, when it's time to go, it's time to go. Rain falls fast, and so do the creeks. Usually, for me, there are so many people calling me wanting to devise a plan, there's no time to go post on a message board while checking Google Earth, responding to texts/calls, pouring over the Gazetteer, packing gear/boats, gassing up, etc etc etc. You get the point. The key is, if you're new to the area, find a couple of folks who are creekers like Renee, Scott, etc (which it sounds like you have) and when it looks like it is going to rain, start calling them the night before and seeing what their plans/hopes are, and be persistent. If they aren't going, ask who is and try and hook up with 'em. There's plenty of folks who don't mind new faces in the eddy. Lets just hope we have lots of opportunities to boof it up this fall!!

Re: Animosity on the message board
I couldn't agree more with what Zach said. Usually the only time to actually post on the board is via cellphone in spotty areas, and thats too late unless you plan 2 laps. I have recently moved to CO and had a few boaters I paddled clear creek with the other day was asking if I knew a gannon....I guess thats you.ARzach wrote:Seems you came in towards the end of several of us leaving the state, and/or monitoring this board. HA ha yep that's me...Don't listen to those low flow paddle snobs in Golden about low flows on CC. I've done from Kermits to Golden at 130 CFS...IT ALL GOES without a scratch!!!
Yeah you'll hear em accuse me of boat abusing...Sometimes when my boat lips off she needs a good smacking!
Also you'll not see many minority boaters which is why I'm easy to remember. Say hello to everybody and you better go do Shoshone on New Years day!!! I did it 5 yr in a row and 40-50 people all show up to boat at 11 and 12. 4 years ago it was 8 deg air temp. Tell Bart at GRS sup!

gannon_w, if you're in Fayetteville area and it rains big time just head for Hwy 16 and Crossover in the big parking lot and watch for boats on top of cars.
I usually post here when I'm headed down, looking to paddle creeks with some folks. Just make it rain and then look for my post and we'll paddle.
