Solar Cooking

Post by DeBo » Sun Aug 07, 2011 12:14 am

A friend of mine built one of these and baked brownies in her front yard this week! I did some research and found out that solar cookers have been around for a hundred years or more! I really want to try this. Sounds like a great thing to do while camping.

Video of making cinnamon bread in solar cooker:

Maybe we could do a solar cooking competition at Rendezvous?

Even found a link about solar cookers being used in third world countries.

Solar cooking? Just drop an egg on the asphalt at about 1 in the afternoon. TA-DAAA!
BTW, this heat is fricking killing me.

This looks really interesting. And, AT LAST, a way to harness the heat and sun of August to produce something to be enjoyed. My daughter home schools and I would love to snitch this idea and incorporate it into a project for for the grandbabies. Thanks for sharing!!!!!!!

Yeah! My friend who did this is a science teacher. It is a great project for kids. They can learn a lot about the power of the sun, learn that you can build and create something that works without having to buy it at the store and when you are done you have a treat that you made yourself.

See my blogue in Portuguese language

you can see some models

-cardboard box inverted

http://fogoessolares.blogspot.com/p/caixa-invertda.html

here the automatic translation:

This model is based on a carton of pre-bought size 60*40*40cm (*). Has the particularity that open from the bottom to take advantage of the fact that the hot air to rise and thus be retained, making the leakage of heat.

GREENHOUSE
----------
The case is reversed, with the lid on the bottom and the surface is made transparent at the bottom of the box.
The bottom of the box is cut, leaving a 2cm border on which is glued a rectangle of transparent acrylic glass 5mm thick.
This glass is glued using silicone high temperature (300 º C). The sealant should also be used to cover all possible routes of air leakage, including the edges and corners of the box.

The isolation is reinforced by two methods:

- by doubling the thickness of the box, making a link to the outside half time on all four sides of the box, which allows it to fold into a halfway also cut the edges of the box. The inner wall performed well, it also aims to hold the glass downward, giving strength to the assembly. The side wall of the box now has two thicknesses of corrugated cardboard.
- Two extra thick, are made by performing two interior side walls, made with corrugated cardboard pasting the same two layers of wood with white glue.

The bottom cover is held with the lid of the box, to which are added four layers of cardboard glued to the rectangular central part, with the inner dimensions of the box, in order to make the thermal insulation at the bottom of the box and allow a fit with some tightening with the interior sidewalls.

This box is built like a very efficient stove for heat losses are minimal, which can be seen because the temperature of the side walls be close to room temperature and not the one that develops within it.

ACUMULATOR
-------------
This element is optional but important contribution to the efficiency and performance of the stove. It is intended to accumulate the heat energy received inside the box and save it for a considerable time by avoiding the variations caused by, for example, reduction of energy due to periods of cloudiness.
We chose a tempered glass 10mm thick. The glass has high thermal inertia and high thickness allows the mass to store much energy, and make it more robust. This glass is painted dull black with ink from a high temperature from 600 to 800 ° C sold in spray.

MIRRORS
---------
The mirrors are made on sheets of honeycomb polypropylene from 3.5 to 5mm thick, made in two parts, on which is applied a metal mirror band (DC-FIX or other similar)..
The form and allow bending by two turnbuckles, adjust the tilt of the mirrors so that they fit the height of the sun.
The material chosen also very light, is very resistant mechanically and in particular the water, allowing it to wash which is essential to maintain the levels of reflection.

POT
----
The pot can be any one, advising naturally dark colors dull or even black. Especially indicated (**) are glass bowls 'Pyrex' or ceramics, which can be painted black outside the spleen with the same ink temperatures taken so that it is very stable at lower temperatures, do not emit toxic odors . They can also be used bars or aluminum pans, enameled cast iron, etc.. It is more practical because the naughty to be rectangular and thus be able to make better use of space also rectangular box (***).

--------------
(*) Can be found in Stapples or MaxMat in sets of 5 boxes.
(**) Because they have high thermal inertia and thus an increased energy storage and stability.
(***) Allocates this stove and two 30*25cm platter. While allowing revenues to be done two or monitor separately.

ENJOY IT

Best Regards,

armando

Hey Debo, try instructables.com and builditsolar .com. Both these sites have solar cookers on them, lots of them.
