Great job Zen! I really enjoyed this and I especially liked seeing Nutall's drawings next to yours of today.

Dave, I used two point and shoots - Kodak's Z740 and Cannon's SX20. I'm dreaming of upgrading to an inexpensive SLR. Any recommendations?

I have been looking at most any of the Pentax digital SLR's - mainly cause I have a bunch of old Pentax lens for the film cameras. I am told the pentax digital SLR's will accept the old pentax lens. Been looking at Amazon and it seems like 500 bucks is the going price for Pentax bodies. I used to do a lot of film work with several SLR's but to my knowledge no more commercial US film processors these days.
Like most these days, just not the disposable income to spring for a new toy when I have a decent point and shoot.
I have the Optio W10 and W30 which work pretty good.
Bottom line tho, the composition and quality of those images you took are very hi quality.
Get a digital SLR and my opinion is we will be seeing your images in magazines. Excellent theme on Searching for Savanna. I would not be surprised to see one of the AR vacation mags interested in Searching for Savanna.

Dave, I too feel remorseful about the end of film phothography so much.
Like a lot of people of a certain age, my folks gave me a Kodak Brownie at 9 years old, then by high school age , gave me their nice 35mm German-made 'Tourister' cameras, and 8mm movie cameras. Later, after college, I returned to Henderson to study photography for a further two years, in which time I bought a Cannon A-1, Cannon FTb, and Nikon F-1 35mm SLRs with 500mm f-8 reflex lens, several shorter lenses and several nice filters. I had lots of fun with film and could only have hoped to aspire to the clarity of images such as those made by folks with the 2X2 Roliflex cameras, and certainly the masters of the 4X5 and 8X10 inch view cameras, like Ansel Adams. Such quality, I just don't think a digital image can ever be as good. I'll bet any of us with older quality cameras and optics laying around lament them now just being expensive, well-made artifacts, I sure do... I so enjoyed loading my own film from bulk rolls, and all the fun times in the dark room experimenting with various developing solutions, enlargers, photographic papers, etc.
In the last ten years I have moved on with the smaller digital point&shoot water resistant cameras I can carry in my PFD to the larger digital SLRs, like the Nikon D-3 I now use. I still though lament not even being able to use the older quality lenses on the newer cameras.
