Vacationing in Asheville

Post by GN YAKN » Tue May 31, 2011 3:27 pm

Going to Asheville next month and need recommendations for what to see and do.

Know the French Broad is close by but are there any park and play spots in town or some really nice (and easy) bike trails close by?

Music?

Thanks,

Dave

I lived in Winston-Salem for 4 years nThe two biggest touristy things in Ashville are the Biltmore estates and Gove Park inn. Of course the NOC is a short drive maybe an hour. Plenty of mountain biking too

Dave,

There are a few park and play places on the French Broad in the Asheville area. I think they are listed in one of the books on SE Rivers.
Asheville is a great town. Music, entertainment. I have a friend from New Zealand who could have lived anywhere in the SE US and he decide Ashville was the spot.

Enjoy, Dave

The green isn't too far & IIRC, there's a section that's pretty mild. Also the pigeon is pretty close. ME's parents get a week at Lake Junaluska, which is pretty close & Waynesboro is pretty neat to walk the downtown & the mast general store is fun. There's a really cool pizza/ beer pub/ movie theater in Ashville by UNC-Ashville. Hope you have fun!!

If they aren't out touring, catch a show with Red June.

There is a spot right downstream from the water treatment facility called "s**t hole" It has some nice features, but the water stinks. But section 29 of the FB is still about another 40 miles down stream. If you get crazy you can go up the hill from "s**t hole" there and sneak past the quarry to one of the coolest waterfall swimming holes I have ever seen. Be careful though and dont block the parking or they will call the cops to tow you.

Sounds like no great Park & Play in town. Debating taking a boat since I'll be by myself and we have a conference to attend in town. Thought it would be worthwhile if they had a nice park n play.

Cindy will be with me so choices for boating streams will be limited.

thanks for the input!

Do you flyfish? There are some incredible streams stocked by the Delayed Harvest program: http://www.flyfishingnc.com/streams/tro ... eams-in-nc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Dave, you should get on boatertalk and hook up with a group. I think it would be a terrible decision not to bring a boat. Tellico isn't too far away either. You can pretty much huck the falls at any level.

Not to sure of boating in the area, save all the streams in western Carolina that have been mentioned most are a couple hours from A-villle.

Bent Creek is a great place to go biking for single track.

And if you want to stay on the road, you can't beat the Blue Ridge Parkway (bring a headlight for long tunnels). You can access it from Bent Creek or from various locations in A-ville.]
