Does anyone have any experience with a Pelican Bayou 160??

Post by catdog6 » Wed May 25, 2011 7:18 am

Found one that has been garage kept. I've only seen pictures so far but supposed to see it this weekend. Seems to be a little heavy at 115 lbs.. Wondering how much harder this will be to paddle than a guide or discovery 169? Thanks, Kevin

Are you looking for the square back and motorized operation? If not, this just isn't even in the same category as the boats you describe (and heavy as an anchor). If you are looking for a canoe for all-paddle river use (or even lake use) I just can't see a "sporting goods store" boat like this making sense under any circumstances.

Haven't had any personal experiences, but googled it and found several reviews. Many were favorable, but I also noticed that many were using it with a motor or trolling motor. All mentioned the weight.

It seems it is really more of an alternative to a 14' jon boat than an alternative to a typical river canoe. With a motor, it could be a good choice for a river with shoals where a jon boat might hang up or get dented on an occassional rock, but I don't think it would be fun going any distance on paddle power alone.
