Great day on Richland
Great day on Richland
Good day on Richland today, lot's of boaters including rubber, K1's, OC1's,saw a Taureu(Death Boat) getting ready to put on, met His Honor Chris Kelly( but due to a miscomminication about shuttles, thought he was on the river before us, when he actually putin behind us), good run with no swims,no head hits and only a couple of shoulder tweaks. Andy Monfee got to relieve some stress after his daughter's wonderfully pretty wedding, and Richland is back on it's way up. I really need to work tommorrow, but could be tempted, esp., if there would be a chance to oar Pam(Shuttle Goddess) down. dale
Re: Great day on Richland
It was a great day. Hopefully pam gets her raft ride tomorrow. I wish that I could be there for that, but back to work.

Arliss Dale - Wish we would have known earlier and had another several inches of water. ARG would have been honored to have given our favorite shuttle goddess a royal ride down Richland.
With the water level at just below 3.5 when we launched, I don't think passengers would have been a good idea today. The water was probably too low for rafts with no passengers but ARG is nothing if not stubborn.
We bumped and scraped down more than a little bit with just us in the rafts. Lots of oar shipping; some high siding; and a few ARG rock/spin moves. We caught the eddy just above Roadblock and portaged. Green Room was a very tight squeeze, as was the rapid above the confluence. Cap'n Downstream and I both had to get out in second rapid down from the confluence and rock hop. I was dead meat on a stick at Cindy's, about to go over the drop sideways when the back of the raft clipped the pyramid rock, which luckily turned me 90 degrees straight over the lip. Not enough water to run Apple Pie anywhere but far left, and no good option for running straight - pushed forward into the eddy above the big rock on river left and backed down the rest of the way. Ranger Rick had an unscheduled EVA at USU. We all ran Door No. 1 at LSU, all got blown up on the rock straight across from the drop, and all wallowed around on the pillow to the left of the hole until we could straighten up and finish the bottom part of the rapid (Thrasher got blown left and had to get out to pull his raft over the rocks on river left). Ran left at Maytag - no problems.
The water rose a good half a foot while we were breaking down and loading - looks like it crested just above 5 feet* (Why does tomorrow have to be Monday? Why?)
* 5 feet on the USGS gauge, which is still reading high by nearly half a foot by my estimation (the stick at the campground bridge showed 3.29 when we took off - the internet gauge bottomed out at somewhere around 3.75 yesterday afternoon before it started rising again).
Today, coupled with a run on the Hailstone yesterday, made for a near perfect weekend.

I had a blast. Thanks to everyone who showed me the lines, and helped make my maiden run a success.

Re: Great day on Richland
Dale, I'm not dead, despite being in the so-called death boat. (Although I might have had an out-of-boat experience at USU.) I also wanted to thank the unnamed member of the ARG who held my throw-rope for me at Door #2 when I thought the rest of my party had boogied downstream. Definitely a fantastic day on Richland! We had two first-timers, and both came away VERY happy. I only wish I had gotten to run it with some of ya'll in long boats to see those tight drops REALLY get styled! (I was behind the guy in the Rival, but never actually got to watch him run anything.)
