Looking for a place to Kayak.

Post by sgj52084 » Wed May 04, 2011 5:37 pm

I kayaked a good bit in the bays of Savannah, GA last year and now I have moved back home to North Mississippi (Tunica/ southaven) area. Does anyone have any good ideas of any rivers that would be good to kayak with a novice to intermediate kayaker.

Look on the river information pages on the American Whitewater site. Two rivers are listed for MS. Al rivers would actually be close to you than many in AR. Also check the Memphis Canoe Club web site. They would be the closer club to you, I think.

Sunflower River is in your area. Check with username c8mb on the board he's located over by Sardis Lake. There are several good rivers located down around Hattiesburg. The Bayou Chapter Ozark Society has started making an annual trip there. Check out Canoeing Mississippi by Ernest Herndon. I think he covers every river in the state.

The backwaters of Arkabutla Lake would be close for you, as would the Coldwater River, above Arkabutla, and below the dam. You're close enough that the Ghost wouldn't be over 1.5 hrs away. The Tallahatchie is interesting above and below Sardis Lake. I can go on forever..... This also has some good ideas....http://www.theflyingcarpet.net/destinations.htm
