Floated the Upper Ouchita today

Post by Van » Fri Apr 29, 2011 8:22 pm

Floated the Upper Ouachita today and the water was great. Floated from the put-in at Acorn to McGuire Access. 1400cf to 1200cf seams to be a good water level to float this section. Lots of good rapids and a good current, but I would have to advise anyone attempting it to watch out for trees and limbs overhanging some of the cutes between Acorn and the county road 74 croosing(it is narrow thru section). Just below the county road 74 bridge there is a tree almost completely blocking the river, and 1/4 mile below the river breaks in to 3 chutes and all are blocked by log jams. Once past that the water is great.

You da man... Thats a lot of miles for one day... What did you find between 88 and McGuire? That Acorn to 88 run would have to be pretty limby...

Water was good with no real hazards between 88 and McGuire. Some really nice big rapids through that stretch. Yesterday I drove down to McGuire and the water still looked good, but would stay clear of the low water bridge at McGuire. Also the ford at CR 176 needs to be portaged. I wouldn't launch from Hwy 88 myself, I would use the ford at CR 176, much better access.
