Cossatot First Timers Trip (May 7, 2011)

Cossatot First Timers Trip

Assuming there is water on the Cossatot on Saturday May 7 2011 the Cossatot maiden voyage tradition will continue. As time draws nearer I will post updates on the message board but here are the basics. If you would like to try you newly learned skills from canoe school on the Cossatot, with some addition support, read on. Please contact Walter Felton by e-mail (wfelton@ipa.net) or by phone 870-863-5704 (W) or 870-862-0934 (H) before 9 PM, to get your name on the list and get details about meeting times and places. I will need to hear from people that are interested so that we have enough support boaters for the trip and to ensure that you have the skills and equipment necessary for the trip. I will send individual questionnaires to participants to assess skills and equipment and will reserve the right to ask an individual to not participate if in my opinion they are not prepared. Also everyone will be required to sign an ACA waiver which I will send in advance to ensure that each person has “time to consider the risk” before signing the waiver. There will be a $5 fee for non American Canoe Association members to cover the cost of insurance. You will need your ACA number to avoid this charge. If you are a Cossatot veteran and would like to help support this trip (as many of you have done in the past) please contact me as well to get the details on meeting times and places. I will not respond to questions about the trip on the board. Please contact me directly by e-mail of phone.

shiner 1969,

Please see Walter's original post.

It is my understanding Walter does not monitor this message board on a regular basis.

You will need to contact him via email or phone per the original post.

Dave

PS: Trips like this one are one of the many benefits from Arkansas Canoe Club membership.

Dave, thanks for your reply, i contacted walter via e-mail. whats it cost to become a member, i hav'nt seen that anywhere? used to be a member of MWA but dropped out, seems to be a lot of clique's in there club that will let you paddle along but seems like you never fit in. i never felt like i was overly welcome. might just be me, and my strange ways, i like being strange : jack

Been a ACC member since the 80's maybe earlier memory is the first thing to go bad

for many years the WW boating here in Tulsa was pretty slim. A lot of my local buds found other sports to do. I continued to hit Arkansas almost every weekend all over the state during boating season.

I monitored this message board and went were people were boating
or
many weekends just went to my favorite runs

I always was accepted, had fun, ran shuttle and made many new friends who have become now long time trusted buds. I still often just show up to boat and have never had a problem, the tradition continues!

I have found ACC and this message board membership to be a tolerant bunch and long as you have a cooler of beer (Bud Lite being the favorite) for sharing, it does not matter if you are somewhat strange or what ever.

the more members ACC has the stronger our voice for doing things for area creeks.

Give joining ACC some thought.

thanks , again. i'll check out joining, i've been going to the mulberry for a long time now, some times camping and boating alone but there's always some one around, now i have a grandson that realy enjoys going. i'm not much on drinking a lot of beer, but a little now and then. but i do go by the handle of shiner, so you might guess what that means. hope to run into you on one adventure or another! thanks again for your input. jack

Will this include the upper cossatot for ones that haven't paddled it? Like down to Ed Banks or through the essess. I want to do those sections but will not want to do the falls.

Karla,

I think it depends on water levels. I'm pretty sure if the water is good they start at 246. If the water is high they only go to Ed Banks. Not sure if they ever start at Ed Banks.

Pretty positive they would not start at the Falls.

It's gonna be a great trip with more safety set up than you can shake a stick at.

Submit your info to Walter if interested. He is the trip leader and makes all the decisions.

Trips, water level allowing, usually start at the Ed Banks bridge and go down to Highway 4. One does not have to run the falls since there are always a few who choose to take out at the campground. Membership in the ACC or ACA is not required to participate but the $5 fee for ACA insurance is required for non-ACA members.
