Bayou Deview Sunday 3/20

Post by DeBo » Thu Mar 17, 2011 11:48 pm

Bayou DeView remains at a great level. Sunday's forcast is for mostly sunny and 78 degrees. We will meet at T'Rick's in Hazen at exit 193 off I40 at 9:30AM or at the Apple Lake access on Hwy 70 at 10:00AM. We will put in at Hickson Lake and take out at Apple Lake. Distance is about six miles with an easy shuttle.

Should be a beautiful day!

DeBo,
Look forward to seeing you Sunday morning. Bring the cajun books with you and I will bring my GPS and the book on the 1927 flood for you. Will meet you at Hickson lake. I could not find Apple lake listed on any of the maps I have. Is it the small lake at the end of Island Road. (The right leg of the Y of Dagmar Road south of I40 is Island Road) Could you or Cowper post the coordinates for Apple lake location and I will put them in google earth. Will sure be glad when I learn how to use that GPS unit.

N34.89033 W91.2983 Hickson Lake

N34.8416 W91.282 Apple Lake

The turn to the Apple Lake boat ramp, and Bayou Deview boat lane (take out) is a hair over 0.5 miles East of the turn into Dagmar, just after you cross Bayou DeView.

Got it, Thanks! Looks like it's going to be a nice day and we will be passing through some pretty timber. The trees are really greening up with the warm weather we've had this last week.
Are you still on nights? Will you be making this trip with us?

Just curious, does "good level" mean moving water? Minna

Yep, still on nights - was able to go with Debo yesterday plus a friend from work who is on the same schedule.

The snakes are out, but only saw about three all day. Water level is great, so I'm really jealous of those who can go again.

Enjoy it, because there is a possibility the Bayou DeView gage has been taken off-line permanently. If this is confirmed, it will mean that future Bayou DeView trips will always be "hit and miss" and require a back-up plan for floating the Cache if DeView is too low. That's going to mean more time 'cussing and discussing in the parking lot, and more hours driving for fewer hours on the river...

Good level means...

Water spreads out of the banks and into the trees in many places...

When you come to a down log, 95% of the time you can find a way to paddle around it, instead of having to balance on it and pull your boat across... (too bad, as this can be the source of relatively rare "swamp carnage")

Current speed of 1 to 2 miles an hour may occur in places. Swims are very rare, but have occurred when this current conspires with overhanging tree limbs...

The stretch is a really good one, except for some freeway noise that you will hear for part of the trip. But even with that, it is a particularly nice float, and will most likely include a visit to a heron rookery.

Hey Karla,
This would be a great day for you to demonstrate that "roll" you have mastered!!!!!!

Annie,
Do you know where the T Ricks at Hazen is. Most everyone will be meeting up there. I plan to take the back road to Brasfield and meet up with the group at Hickson Lake.

Haven't seen Carl or Mike sign in on this trip. Hope they can make it. Will FB Al and Tina tonight to see if they can be persuaded to make the drive over from MS and bring the "barge". Looking forwaqrd to seeing eveybody Sunday.

We hit the wildlife jackpot on this trip. A Great blue Heron rookery, several beautiful rat snakes, one very photogenic cottonmouth and a snoozing coon enjoying the sunshine when we interrupted his nap. Thank you Debo for hosting us on this very enjoyable trip.

Debbie and a beautifully patterned rat snake. Debbie said this color variation was unusual for a mature snake. We saw another very large rat snake with the same checkerboard pattern.
