What is the fishing like upstream of the campground? Or is it better below?

Thread revival here. Would like to take the fam on hike/fish trip. Does the creek have enough deep holes left in it below the campground to be worth fishing our way down a few miles then walking back up? I've only been there at 3.something' or so.

Be aware that parts of lower richland used to go underground during no rain drought.

you end up with a pool here and there with long sections of dry creekbed between pools.

Dale or some of the current regulars might have more info as to the current situation.

Lol nice threadjack. Thought I might have a look at the new monument while we were in the area.

Back on subject: the scenario you describe is what I had in mind. We've had a lot of fun hiking up our local creekbeds and catching these fish. They are imprisoned in small pools and very hungry. I'll check with them.

Hiked up to Richland Falls once in August. Threw a lure in the pool below and hooked a small brownie in under two seconds. Also spotted a chambered nautilus (?) fossil at the lip of the falls that trip. That was probably 1979, give or take a year. Often wonder if that fossil is still there.

Love me some Richland smallmouth fishing! Was just up there in an undisclosed location a few weeks ago. My guide must have caught 30 fish that morning and afternoon. I had one of my better days by my standards.

Wish I could share!  8) :poke:

Well I got a real late start on the Sunday plan, and won't be off work until next weekend. So I'm thinking it would make for a great Saturday. Will keep ya'll posted on the plan. I'm taking my wife and 10yo boy, this will be the closest they'll get to seeing Richland from inside the gorge.

These isolated pools are perfect habitat for cottonmouths. We had a very close call few years ago while fishing lower Richland's pools - one of our dogs got bitten (in the eye) by big snake hiding under tree root in one of these pools. So be carefull.

Good point. Wear shoes, not sandals as we spotted a half dozen last weekend in Clear Cr., one of them swimming with a nice sunfish in it's jaws. It later swam the other way with a large lump in its belly. They didn't seem too aggressive...

Lower Richland is also about the only place I've seen rattlers, though they're pretty shy. Make a little noise and be careful where you put your hands and feet. Good fishing in there.
