Re: Full moon big piney run
I just heard about Saturday's full moon. Supposed to be 30% brighter than normal. It won't be that bright again 'til 2029. Wow!
I've only been down Big Piney once, am wondering if I could do it in the dark. Still thinking about going . . .

Would you be doing Helton's to Long Pool or Long Pool to Twin Bridges?
Re: Full moon big piney run
I'm in Central AR for the next 4-5 days and would definitely be down for a Big Piney run by the light of the full moon. Be the first time after dark that I plan on being on the water!

Several of us took a midnight, full-moon trip on the Mulberry a couple of years back. It was magical! One of the finest paddling experiences ever.
The water turns into an invisible black void that makes you feel suspended in your boat. You totally sense the water by feel rather than by seeing it.
If you can find a small wave to surf on it is a totally incredible sensation!
This weekend would be a perfect opportunity. Alas, I've got other plans

You Dogs! Still working the outage, but had yesterday off, and as I was taking off the river I looked up at the rising moon and commented to others "who needs sleep, we could go on down to the next take out!" (I had been up 25 hours straight already at this point in time, so that urge had to be really strong due to the huge moon I was seeing...)
Jan, probably "yes", if you've done anything else of similar difficulty before. Plus it would be really cool to do it for your first time by moonlight - you'll be telling that story for years. Some tips:
1) Make sure a couple of others know to keep an especially close eye on you. If you do flip and loose your grip on your paddle, it is much harder to find it again.
2) Dress extra warm. It's like paddling on a rainy day - if you ever get cold, you'll have trouble warming up again unless you stop and build a fire. And as soon as you leave the fire to continue downstream, well, you can figure it out...
3) Take a headlamp, but use it for emergencies only. It will only ruin your night vision.
4) Sometimes we tie glowsticks to the boats (back end), and tape them to our helmets. It helps keep others in sight, but mostly it's just fun seeing the bobbing lights in the distance whenever the group spreads out. We experimented with taping one to the paddle, but that didn't work well because it just blinds you to what is further in the distance.
I'll be talking about you guys all night at work! I'm going to whining to my co-workers, "you know, all my friends are out on the Big Piney right now!"

We plan on doing heltons down. We are leaving russvegas around 8. Have a group of 5 yaks and 2 canoes so far. We will have a 16 foot flat bed to haul the boats to the top. Call me at 479 970-1154 if you wanna go.

Second that. You are blessed to live a short drive away from (flowing) Ozark streams.Cowper wrote:You Dogs!

John please tape glow sticks to yourself, your boat, and your paddle. Also try to find your roll again and tape a glow stick to that too because I have seen you loose it before.

Re: Full moon big piney run
Tomorrow night is supposed to be mostly cloudy. I'm not sure how much moonlight will make it through the cloud cover but it might be a good idea to have emergency bivys, firestarter, etc. in case you end up spending the night on the river.
