MOHAWK-SOLO 14

The Solo 14 is Mohawk's compact, light and strikingly-beautiful canoe with a tucked in center section and detailed lines molded into the bow and stern. Nimble on the water, the Mohawk Solo model of canoes are a delight to paddle. A real joy on small, twisty creeks the Solo 14 is the perfect craft for someone looking for a lightweight boat for relaxing in. Yet with its flared bow and sides the Mohawk Solo 14 can also easily handle light whitewater and choppy lakes while keeping its occupant dry. The Solo 14’s extra length trades off weight and maneuverability for a larger capacity and better tracking.

Is that boat fairly fast at all. I'm in the market for a lightweight solo cruiser. I've got a Caption so I don't need a ww boat and my 14' Mad River is a slow heavy pig. If it's the red one it is the perfect color.

The Solo 14 is a little on the slow side. That's the sacrifice for the added draft needed to increase it's stability. I could always pull the gunwales so the center width is narrowed. However, if you're after a faster flatwater solo I'd try out Mohawk's Odyssey series.

So I still think this would be a good boat for bouncing around the Caddo or Dragover, the Rockport float and even the Piney...I don't mind taking a boat to the limits, but still not be a pain to paddle on the Buffalo. Feedback anyone?

How does it compare to a Wenonah Argosy?

The Solo 14 isn't meant to compete derectly with the Argosy. However, if you're wanting more speed and less stability then give the Argosy and the Odyssey 14 the ol' Pepsi Challenge. I included links to both boats so you can do your own comparing. Still...the best way to choose a boat is to DEMO.

Length: 14'2", Beam at gunwale: 29", Beam at 4" waterline: 30.5"

Approx. weight: 49 lbs. (Royalex), 43lbs.(R-84 Royalite). Estimated capacity: 400lbs.
Odyssey 14 - Royalex-----Factory Direct - $998.00
Odyssey 14 - Royalite (R84)-----Factory Direct - $977.00

The Mohawk Odyssey 14's functional styling combines flared-sides for a dryer ride and exceptional final stability. A tuck-in narrows the center section to make solo paddling easier on the upper body. The Mohawk Odyssey 14 canoe is nimble and fun to paddle, especially on twisty rocky rivers streams. It’s also a fine craft for taking out onto the lake for a spot of fishing or some nature-watching.

Royalex®: 47 lbs (21.15 kg) w/ Standard Equipment $1099.00
Kevlar® Flex-core: 43 lbs (19.35 kg) w/ Standard Equipment $1779.00

The Argosy is made for solo exploration of rivers and streams, whether paddling the Missouri River at dawn or running the riffles and eddies of the Shenendoah. It's nimble enough to carry you through cross currents and over eddylines.

It has added depth and volume to handle rough water and even whitewater, and plenty of rocker in the keel for maneuverability. The Argosy's ability to lean predictably in tight turns builds in confidence. We recommend it to intermediate and advanced paddlers.

Dave,
Do you have a 17' Nova or Intrepid for sale that are blems? I'm looking into upgrading my OT Disco 164 with my tax refund to a 17 footer. I'm not dead set on it, but just kind of testing the waters.

You're in luck! I have one blemished boat in both an Intrepid 17 and Nova 17. They are both red. Send me an email and I'll get you the details. dthomas@mohawkcanoes.com

On a little different note: For those of you who can't wait for your tax return. Mohawk Canoe Co. now offers in-house financing. The terms are: at least 60% down with the remaining amount to be paid out in no more than 6 months and with 1.5% interest added to the financed portion.

Dave,

I am wanting to purchase my first canoe (preferably, a used one). I am currently making plans to float the entire floatable Buffalo River in early June. I think it will take about 6 days to float. Would you recommend a good canoe for this kind of journey. Would the blemished Mohawk Solo still for sale, and if so, would it be a possible choice? Any advice would be appreciated.

Brad,
How much weight (yourself and cargo) will you be needing to float? How much weight in gear are you bringing along? The reason I ask is that if you're a big guy (275+pounds) it may not be the best choice for you because it's estimated capacity is 375 pounds. Keep in mind though that it really is an estimate. With that said, a surefire way to find out if it works for you would be do demo it. I have a Solo 14 demo canoe ready and waiting in Fort Smith for you to paddle and find out if it's the right fit.

Dave,

I weigh about 170 lbs. I haven't weighed my gear, but would think no more than 80 lbs total. Would the Solo 14 be a good fit? If so, I may try to come check out the demo you were referring to.

Could you meet next Wednesday around 5:00?

Brad
