We are all afflicted with Cognitive Dissonance. The greater our religious, social, financial or political affiliation, the greater the affliction. We hear what we want to hear. We believe what we want to believe. Truth becomes irrelevant.
Re: Univ of AR Kayak OCC Practice Schedule
Has anyone on here done the kayak polo before? I have never played it, but wouldn't mind extra time in my boat.

Re: Univ of AR Kayak OCC Practice Schedule
Kayak polo is a very mellow version of Boatball played by the NW chapter. They play it like a cross between basketball and water polo. You cannot paddle with the ball and have to shoot the ball in to a basketball goal to score. They have some other rules too that I cannot seem to remember. Last time I went OCC required you to where a helmet with a face guard, which they provide.

Well-I'm going to give it a try. And try to wear my helmet. No face mask needed.
Richard--any idea on how to convince the University that ACC members should have access to their (OCC) floats (and hiking/ camping/ rock climbing)? My thing is that we represent a outstanding community organization that can provide support, expertise, enthusiasm and ultimately connections for students to continue with great activities.
Unfortunately, there is not a way-currently--for community folks to join those Buffalo River trips.

Re: Univ of AR Kayak OCC Practice Schedule
Educated guess:
You could join the trips if you were a HPER member, which you could be by paying the Alumni HPER membership fee if you are also a member of the Alumni Association. It's all very complicated, if you do want to join a trip as a "civilian"... But really, the reason they don't want non-HPER members to sign up for trips is that the OCC exists by and for the student body. They need to keep the trip open for students up to the last possible moment, because if they are turning students away, they are cutting off their very reason for being.
On the other hand, the OCC has to schedule trips a semester ahead of time. This is a big problem for paddling, current weather as an example. I think we should make sure the OCC is aware of all of our trips, and reach a point where they are willing to route interested students through us. I am definitely trying to get OCC staff and visitors aware of the ACC meetings as a first step. I am also hopeful that one of the OCC grad students will be able to join the kayak instructor class this spring. I think that would also help solidify a relationship between ACC and OCC.

Does anybody know if the sessions will be closed if the University is closed?

Yes. If the university is closed, the HPER is open shortened hours, but all "Group Excercise" events are canceled. I don't expect that the University will be close Thursday, though, so the open pool session should run as scheduled.

Re: U of A OCC Kayak Practice Schedule
Sorry, I meant to post on wednesday night. When the UofA is closed, the OCC is open, but only till 6pm, and the climbing wall and other facility events (including pool sessions) are closed/canceled.
Thanks,
Paul

Re: U of A OCC Kayak Practice Schedule
I have played Kayak polo at the OCC, and it is fun. Different from boatball, and you gotta have some bball skill to score. Very much a passing game. The OCC guys running everything are cool, and everybody looked like they had a good time. I agree we should try to cross-pollinate more with the OCC.

Re: U of A OCC Kayak Practice Schedule (last session 3/15)
Tuesday night (2/22) will be another chance. We're having an open pool session from 7:30-9:30pm. $5 for non UofA people, free for UofA people. I am going to see if I can't get 4 (!!!) open canoes up there for people to play with. If I can, I'll have a stable traditional solo WW boat, a tippier traditional solo boat, my short creeker, and a rodeo OC-1.
Thanks,
Shep

Re: U of A OCC Kayak Practice Schedule (last session 3/15)
I heard a rumor that they might have kayak polo tonight for all UofA ers out there. Maybe 7PM? I'd call first.
