First Storm of 2011 - Snow Reports!

Post by Cowper » Sun Jan 09, 2011 7:28 pm

OK, I'll start. In Conway, the dusting began late afternoon, but it's going good now. Maybe 2" on the ground and still falling. It's not "black ice" slick, but it does seem slicker than your average snow. Even in DeBo's subaru, stopping was slow, stopping going downhill wasn't really happening, and some sideways power sliding occurred even when I wasn't heavy into the throttle. Finally I decided to quit pushing my luck in DeBo's car, and save it for when I'm driving my truck tomorrow. (Those who know me know this means, "yes, it's really slick...")

Hwy 65 going towards town is now at a standstill, with many cars 1/2 way up the hill, some having slid sideways into the other cars and pretty much preventing passage even if you do have 4WD or AWD. This is pretty common at this spot; usually it takes the police and highway department a couple of hours to get things moving again.

Rumors overheard in stores and gas stations include overturned tractor-trailer rigs between Conway and Russellville (don't know if all lanes are blocked or not) and more problems going north out of Conway.

I'm guessing my "1 hour drive" to work tomorrow will take 2 hours or more.

So what else is going on out there? :hammer:

Here at White River NWR, it started about 3pm with sleet and then snow.. we have over 3 inches out my front door right now and it is still falling. Guess since I'm the closest to work, I will be the only one reporting in tomorrow.

Has anyone ever tried kayaking down a snowy hill/small mountain? I have....

Susan drove down to Little Rock this afternoon with the Pathfinder. It does have new Michelin M/S II tires on it. I would have gone but she is sharing a motel room with her sister and said it would complicate things and she had things she needed me to do up here.

She said there was nothing in Russelville when she stopped to gas up and eat lunch, but the last 45 minutes going into Little Rock were white knuckled in 4LO and 3rd gear for 20 miles, with people off of the roads and wrecked right and left.

If you do not need to REALY be somewhere, stay home.

Her dad is scheduled for major surgery tomorrow and they are spending the night in a hotel across the street from the hospital. Expect she will be down there most of the week. Her mom just recovered from brain surgery two months ago, so they wanted to be there to support both Carolyn and JM who are 80.

She says she thought she saw Richard McFadden in Conway in his Subaru.

Not much snow here in Fayetteville I'd say an inch at most, but I live on the big hill behind the razorback stadium and there are cars crashed left and right from the hills.

It's basically impossible to get up my street at this point.

Yep, can't leave home either here in NE TX, our road isn't steep, but enough of an incline that last evening I watched the neighbors across the road make 3 attempts, then gave up. Only got a couple inches here, but schools all closed, so no work for me today :D

3 inches on the ground in Kansas City so far and looks like we're heading for 8 to 12" before it's all over tomorrow afternoon. Highs in the teens the next few days, so it's not going anywhere fast. Waxing up the playboat for some snow-drift loops this afternoon. :-)

6" just outside Hot Springs. Nice dry powder. It was 61 here Saturday afternoon.
My whitewater kayak slides down the hill very well.

2-3 inches in Hiram, Ar. Roads in front of house are slushy right now. Got a chance for a bit more according to the forecast for tonight.

Candle wax would probably work well. Use an (old) iron to melt it onto the bottom of the boat and then run the iron over it to smooth it down and spread it out.
