Video Editing software?

Post by Shep » Mon Dec 27, 2010 8:02 pm

Santa was quite kind this year, and I got a Surf Hero camera to record my poor choices on the river. Who can recommend free or low-cost video editing software? I am a PC, and a student (so student discounts are my friend).

Thanks,
Shep

Man, if you were on Mac I could probably help you out, but on a pc i think you might be pretty limited. When I get back to work next week I'll talk to some of my editing folk and see what your options might be.

Thanks! I may be able to use some macs in the campus computer labs, so I will investigate that next week. I bought QTPro 7 for windows, and have been playing around with that. FWIW, the camera records MP4 files, and Windows Movie Maker (I have XP) doesn't do MP4.

Thanks!

You should find out what codec it uses to record the mp4s. I have a HD camcorder that records with a strange mp4 codec that is a pain to get into FInal Cut Pro for editing.

The only windows editing software that I know of is Adobe Premiere and Premiere Elements. If you can get a copy cheap, it might get the job done for you, but it is not worth spending much.

If you have a PC you should have Windows Media Player pre installed for making short clips. Here is a link if you don’t
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... dia-player" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It is basic, but okay if your new to editing.

However, if you get your teeth into it try Adobe, it’s awesome…good luck.

Magix movie edit pro. You can download a mp4 codec for like 3 or 4 bucks. In my opinion it is worth the 50 bucks it costs for the software

Actually, I found out the UofA has a lab with pro-grade editing equipment (SHAMELESS PLUG!) I just finished a video from my snowboard trip over New Years... http://vimeo.com/19170986" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (/shameless plug)

I have been using FinalCut Pro, and next time I have some video to play with I will try out Adobe Premier, since it is available on both PC and Mac.

Thanks!

Paul,

I'm in the Documentary Film MA program at the UofA, and edited my film using Premiere CS3. It takes a little time/playing around to learn, but then so does final cut. Also, you can get access to video edit stations through the Student Technology Center or the MMRC (Multimedia Resource Center). Also, there will be some really awesome edit bays in the Tech Lounge going into the upper floor of the old bookstore. I'm on the tech fee review board, and if you'd like to see any particular software available, lemme know, and I'll request it.

L8r man,

Tony

I think what we've got is good. Next I want to see what the STC has as far as cameras.

Thanks!

Hey Shep,

Any special requests for cameras? NOW is the time to speak up about this, as the tech lounge is happening over the summer. I've talked em into putting in some touchscreens for editing, presentation work, and mapping stuff (GIS). Hopefully the fancier edit bays will each get one. Should be awesome. If you wanna see the plans gimme a yell.

I don't suppose they would consider something water-proof or water resistant, would they? :)

I'll bring up waterproof cameras. Any good ones you know of? I've not had time to check out current gear.
