Morning all,
Well winter is here and it's time to think about tree/shrub planting again. I have at least 3 (maybe 4) different sites that need work this winter. Sure hope some/all of you can show-up for these.
The first will be in January and is at Kelly Slab/Fred Berry Educational Center on Crooked Creek outside of Yellville in Marion County. This will involve the planting of about 600 large trees/shrubs and several hundred willow cuttings. This is a "shovel ready" project and will actually require the use of shovels to do the planting. The shrubs should be between knee and chest tall and the trees should be about head tall. They will all have developed root systems and will come in 3 gallon containers. This means that a hole that will accept the root wad will have to be dug for each one and the removed dirt used to fill-in around the plant. The soil there is great for digging...almost no rocks...REALLY. Because the site has been covered with coconut matting we will need to use 5 gallon buckets to collect the dirt to make it easier to put back in the holes. I have 10 shovels that I will bring, so if you have one to bring it would help. In addition, I have about 15 5-gallon buckets and will get another dozen or so...depending on how many folks might show up. The willow cuttings will be planted into the constructed rock structure (LFSTP) using a breaker bar. Chest waders will be needed for this part of the project. I have several pairs, most of which don't leak too bad. So if you plan to do this part of the project be sure to bring some extra cloths, also a breaker bar would be nice.
The second site is on Little Buffalo River near Jasper in Newton County. This planting will be more what a lot of you have been through in the past. At this site we will be planting almost 3,400 rooted cuttings using dibble bars. I have 9 of these torture tools on hand and will gladly get more if needed. I plan to do this job in February.
The third site is the one we did a couple of years ago on Long Creek near Denver in Carroll County. Based on my last site visit it looks like the vast majority of the seedlings we planted then died as a result of a couple of floods. This time I plan to use a few hundred willow cuttings which should stand up to being flooded better that the seedlings did. This will also be done in January. Again if you have waders and/or mud boots you should bring them and a change of cloths.
Not sure about the 4th site yet, but will keep you informed.
As usual the exact date might change due to weather conditions. As of now I plan to do Kelly Slab on January 15th and/or 22nd. The Long Creek job on the 29th of January. The Little Buffalo planting will be on February 12th and/or 19th.
If you plan to work on the Kelly Slab project we could meet at the feed mill on the west side of Yellville at say 9:00 AM and head to the site. I could come back to the feed mill for those that might be there later. The feed mill is on the north side of highway 62 about ¾ mile west of Yellville.
For those who can help with the Long Creek planting we could meet at the Sonic again. The Sonic is on highway 62 at the east end of Green Forest in Carroll County. Since this planting will go faster than the Kelly Slab planting, we can meet there at about 10:00 AM.
For the Little Buffalo River planting we can meet at the Game & Fish Elk Center about 1.5 miles north of Jasper on highway 7 South in Newton County at 9:00 AM.
Thanks in advance for your participation in this effort.
Please let me know if you can help on any/all of these days.
