Chocked full of wood? SO. Don't people (i.e., yakers) clean the rivers around here? Don't take this the wrong way as I don't mean to keep bragging about CO, but in CO during the off season a weekend walking of a river or creek with a chainsaw was what yakers did to clear wood so we could run it. So when does this thing run and lets get on it now if it's off to clean it. What city is it near? I'll bring my roomie to help...A colorado chick, solid class 3+,4- with some 5-s in her swinging a chainsaw in bun huggers. Who's in?

Cleaning creeks that collect wood on a more regular basis than running is pointless... only kidding.

Seriously though, the 2009 Ice Storm took almost every Ozark steepie off the boatable list with one single blow, not to mention the problem of deadfall in creeks from the Borer Beetle, and all the other natural processes that like to continuously deposit trees in our creeks (the event itself put a lot of wood and left a lot yet to fall along creeks that will continue to make its way down into them). Getting the Richland shuttle road cleared took a pretty large effort from a number of individuals over a couple of weekends and it was pretty accessible.

Not trying to make excuses as a lot more needs to be done and honestly a lot more should probably be done, but it is an ongoing battle in gnarly terrain that needs multiple parties over multiple weekends to clean one creek. Mike's Creek has most likely not been cleaned because it is an obscure creek that not a whole lot of people know about, nor has seen much plastic.

That being said I think a few safe bets for cleaning services are Long Branch, Boss Hollow, and Osage. Stepp Creek has a few trees in it that two people could get out in half a day unless someone took them out. Have not heard if anyone has made it into Shop Creek, but I would wager the upper part is mangled. Went into Adkins with Fish and a chainsaw but it was pointless, so I would imagine that Boen Gulf is toast too. Think Sandy Springs is relatively tree free, but I am not sure if it ever got finished off or not. No clue on Bear Creek.

Matt is right, the destruction from the ice storm is epic. It will take decades to rot away, and it can seem hopeless. But, it is amazing how much of a difference you can make in just a weekends time. The Osage is my project, and there are only a couple of downfalls left in the first mile to clear. I am working on the trail and secret stairway into the Gorge now, and will finish soon. Just under 400' of trail dropping just over 100' and you are about 1 mile into the run and just before the Mushroom. I have gotten permission from landowners along the creek to hike and cut wood too. It is the perfect time to do more, as I have never seen the creek so low. We have an awesome campsite, and I'll provide beer and food to anyone who would help.

I am pretty new to boating, so I did not get to run the steeps before the ice storm that shut down NW Ar. Watching the vids from the pre ice storm era makes me want to get out with a saw and get this stuff open for business. It is getting to be the time of year when the poison ivy is gone and deer season is almost over so we don't have any excuses any more.
