Hello
My name is Scott. I am a member of the St. Louis Canoe and Kayak Club.
As well as the Missouri White Water a**. A small group of us are considering a trip to the AR. TX. border. ( Cassatot ) river. But now I understand that it may be Bigger than class 2 3.. Does anyone have another suggestion for the middle of this Dec. 2010

Be sure to check the Cossatot gage the evening before you drive down.

At this time of the year, the Cossatot is big time rain dependent and can go up or down in a few hours.

Also monitor this message board, if the Cossatot is running, there will be all kinds of trip planning going on.

The upper section is class II+, but you're not likely to catch it. The middle section is class II/III and a lot of fun. The falls are class III/IV and the first 3 drops aren't bad, if you have a guide.

The the Tot needs to be running about 4' before the upper is really runable...

If you want 2/3 you won't beat ed banks to the falls. I would recommend trying to find a "guide" though. There are a few rocks to avoid and it would make life easier to have someone who knows the lines.

When you get to the falls you can take out or run the ones you are comfortable with and then carry up to the campground.

Look for a level around 4' or a little higher for the ideal run.

A lot of times, river descriptions and classification systems still leave something to be desired. Maybe this will help: Folks from Arkansas who have visited the St. Francis sometimes refer to it as "Cossatot Lite". Which is another way of saying if you're comfortable on the St. Francis, you will probably find the Cossatot to be a challenge, but one that you're ready for. If you find a local willing to talk you through it, you can "boat scout" the Cossatot Falls one drop at a time. If you don't, bank scouting is pretty easy. A selective portage or three can completely change the overall difficulty level, and portages are not overly difficult for a person in decent physical condition.

As others are already pointing out, your main concern is the low probability of there being water about 3 weeks from now. If it doesn't work out, come join us in the Spring. And also, while 4 point zero and up is definately on the "wish list", I'll leave you with Lazer's phrase about what we call lower levels: 3 point "fun".

There's defintely lots of opportunities for rock spins in the 3's.
