PADDLE to HAITI

Post by Dave Thomas » Mon Aug 30, 2010 2:27 pm

The brave folks over at Paddle to Haiti could do with some of your support. They will be paddling the length of the Mississippi to raise money for the people of Haiti. They will be making their journey in a pair of Nova 17s that Mohawk has given for the cause. Please help the folks of Haiti out by supporting these paddlers and their efforts.

Well, I have this thing about not helping pay for someone else's fun trip. I like to have a 100% ratio - I personally go on 100% of the fun trips I spend any of my "extra" money on. So I had to ask the hard question. Here's what I was told:

"Good question. 100% of donations go directly to the Lambi Fund http://www.lambifund.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Everyone envolved with the trip is having to pay for everything out-of-pocket." Following the links further reveals that the Lambi fund has a Four Star rating from one of the "charity watch" organizations (highest possible).

Now that we've got that out of the way, I'm wondering what the time frame on their passage through Arkansas might be? Could make a fun trip out to the Mississippi river to go say "hi" to the crew as they come through...

That's a tough one to figure. I know that they started the trip on September the second at the headwaters of the Mississippi River located at Lake Itasca, Minnesota. Today, twenty-seven days later, they have made it to La Crosse, WI. I'm not sure how many miles that is by way of the Mississippi. That might help give you some idea of when they will be passing through Arkansas. A better way estimate a rendezvous date would be to call Michael Gutschenritter at (262) 470-4429. He is the trip/flotilla leader and welcomes folks to call with any questions they might have concerning Paddle to Haiti. It would be cool to paddle a stretch of the voyage along beside them. Good thinkin' Cowper!

Well the Paddle to Haiti crew has made it past all the locks and is just past Saint Louis, approaching Arkansas' border. If there is anyone interested in meeting the crew as they pass through Arkansas let me know.

Dave,
Yes, keep us posted as they move along our border. I was originally toying with ideas ranging from spending at least one night on the river with them, to just cruising out in a small motorboat, saying "hi" and providing them with some liquid refreshments. DeBo's swamp tours may change my plans, but I'd like to keep the option open and may do something on the spur of the moment especially if they happen to pass the mouth of the Arkansas on or near a weekend.

From looking at their site, it is not 100% clear to me where they are, because the google lat/long photos are showing a small picture but aren't linking to anything like an actual coordinate or directly into Google Earth, at least not with my current browser settings. But from the text, it sounds like they passed Memphis a few days ago, so by next weekend they may be well South of us if they are not already.
