I am not on the ACC's committee for this project, but I thought I'd let you know that the first draft of the plans for the whitewater feature at the Lower Ledge (Tanner Street bridge vicinity in Malvern) are being reviewed by the official committee. Your donations are funding this project in part. Contact your committee represetative for full details. I haven't decided which alternate I think would work out best.

Who needs plans to make rapids? They are simple to make. Just need some rock and water. We have both here. So just lend me a big backhoe for a month and leave the water in Catherine. I will give you some rapids my friends!

Re: ROCKPORT LOWER LEDGE PRELIMINARY PLANS HAVE ARRIVED
That is actually one of the possible options for the project. The two alternates that the design firm presented have to do with where the wave feature will be located: adjacent to the left bank or in the middle of the river. The left bank location has several advantages:
1. Accessibility - a sidewalk between the present ledge near the boat ramp and the Tanner Street bridge is planned by the Ouachita River Park Commission for the left bank.
2. Simultaneous use of the river right Swiftwater Rescue training channel will be possible with the put-in for paddlers out of the way on river left
3. Large eddies on each side of the wave plus beach or shore based waiting is possible
4. Better viewing gallery
5. Tubing and general goobering through the wave multiple times is possible
Number 5 is a mild nuisance for paddlers; the city only owns about 100 feet of the shoreline downstream of the bridge, so bank usage may be limited unless my negotiations with the landowner are successful. The landowner is tired of fishermen leaving trash along the bank. If more shoreline becomes accessible, there will be a huge pool available for training/rolling purposes. Bank stabilization may become necessary if the wave is located near the shore. Boat passage will be limited to the center span of the bridge and the SWR training channel. The center span area is the roughest of the three channels during generation, so that is a disadvantage for fishing boats.
The advantages of the center of the river location for the wave are no bank erosion, fewer goobers (if any), and lower cost due to less fill and excavation. The cost difference is not going to be real significant.
I'd say the river left channel, under the bridge span by the bank would be the most desirable. What do you ACC members think?
The cost of constructing the features shown on the preliminary plans is going to be higher than the cost of construction was for the two versions of this project that were put out for bids in 2007. The bids for those came in REAL high (nearly a million dollars for the first letting and half a million for the second - all rejected since we had only about $150,000 at the time). That means a lot of fundraising will have to be done.
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has not given feedback yet on the preliminary plans.
Let us know where you want the wave - along the bank or in the middle.

Re: ROCKPORT LOWER LEDGE PRELIMINARY PLANS HAVE ARRIVED
Dang, not everything requires a degree. This country was built before CAD and fancy engineering degrees where required to get a job at McDonalds. What happened to the American drive to get your hands dirty and make it happen? My dad always said two things to me, you never know what you don't know and you can make it happen, watch it happen, or wonder what the hell happened, your choice son. I have always chosen to make it happen.
Where is my backhoe?
