Dutch Oven Cook-off at Rendezvous!

Post by Crane » Wed Aug 04, 2010 2:26 pm

Once again, the high-light of Rendezvous will be a Dutch Oven Cook-off. This year, it will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday(early firing of charcoal is allowed.) Three fine Judges will be chosen by ME... with no complaining allowed!! There will be three divisions this year: Entre', Breakfast, and Desert. Any contestant may enter any division or all three, or just two divisions. Show up on or before 3:30 and let me know what division(s) you plan to enter.

The basic rules are that each contestant is responsible for their own charcoal, starter and the required pan to keep their DO off the ground. Pre-prep of ingredients is recommended and assembly on-site is allowed. Trash-talking is specifically allowed... so long as it is in good fun. Each contestant must have at least four plates or bowls of their entry in each division before the judges ready for tasting no later than 5:10 p.m.. Entries will be judged 60% for taste, 25% for presentation and 15% for creativity. Bribery of the judges is a tradition... but, it won't get you anywhere:)

Lodge Mfg. Co. has once-again indicated they will sponsor/donate several neat prizes that will be awarded. If other prizes are donated, they will be awarded, too!

So, put on your apron, crank up the coals, and get your favorite DO recipe ready. A Cook-off is going to happen at Rendezvous!!

This Notice brought to you by DO Cook-off Champion Larry Crane... who may cook, but will not compete this year... lucky for YOU!

Talk is cheap. Eating is proof. David Reid and Bob Stout are the ones to beat based on what I have tasted. Still think I needed second helpings of the Cherry Cobler and the pineapple upsidedown cake to decide which was best, but there wasn't any. Fantastic Buffalo river trip to boot. Looking forward to next trip with both of y'all. Was just telling Mary tonight about that float and ya'lls cooking while we paddled on the lake after the rain and she is looking forward to paddleing with you both and tasting your cooking. We didn't eat until 10PM (got back at 9:45 from a 3 hour paddle) and we just about inhaled the salmon and salad when we got back. I set it all up before I left and James volunteered to cook for us. Mary's dog Chloe said she liked the salmon as well. Lemon juice and citrus grill spices at 400F for 20 minutes. Chloe smacked her lips for minutes after every handout.

Clif,

man, jump in on the DO contest.

You will be able to see how others do their DO cooking. One of the best ways to learn is to see a bunch of other DO cookers at work. Then you can copy as you like.

Regardless of the trash talk (part of the deal and lots of fun) every one of the DO cookers I know are all eager to get more people interested in it and always looking for a new recipe or technique.

DO cooking is more or less not that hard. Like every thing else, some dishes work some do not - but rarely is a DO dish bad. My experience is that the basic rules are pretty standard but every DO cooker I know has a different way of doing things and all seem to work.

Bottom line, jump in, hopefully you will learn something about DO work and the best part is having fun.

I know creativity only accounts for 15% of the total score. With that in mind, what were some dishes cooked up in the past?

That's fine bob. You don't have to tell me. I understand. :poke: You're probably too embarrassed of what's been cooked up in the past to talk about it. You know some people like an undercooked or burnt taste to their food. :puke:
I've not entered this before but I'm sure to cook something up that's scrumdiddlyumptious.
Hope you were hungry for a little trash talk, because you just got served some. :D hehehe

I like the way this is starting to heat up... just like coals in a chimmney!! No one should be reluctant to beg-borrow-borrow a Dutch Oven and jump into the fray... really! This is more of a social (anti-social?) event where folks sit around a fire, drink appropriate beverages, josh each other and passers-by, and spend a few hours visiting mostly about river-food.

Bobby and Dave need to be forewarned that Roger is still hot about being beaten out by, according to him, lesser dishes... so, I expect him to be loaded for y'all... particularly in the Trash Talking division.... uh, that's all three divisions, isn't it? Clif and David seem to have taken the challange... and have already scored a few points, but... we'll see, won't we?? Crane

What a bunch of pansies who think they can talk the TRASH!

David, dump cobblers have won in the past as well as green chile cornbread. Cheesy Green Chili and Black Bean Enchiladas walked off with a nice DO once. Apple enchiladas with a coffee liquer syrup knocked the socks of the judges one year! Been a lot of creative dishes come out of those black pots. Seafood casseroles, apple pie, and many other dishes.

Stevie Boy, bring the ringer! Think the Yankee (transplanted or not) can bring it home? UB

All you need to do is bring your best game!!

Crane, you really are stirring this pot without cooking, are you not?
