OT - Need Ideas for Retreat - Leadership Stuff

Post by GN YAKN » Tue Jul 20, 2010 12:18 pm

Hey,

I've got two events coming up that I need to get creative for and come up with some ideas for group activities:

First: Bowling outing with about 20 adults. Need an ice breaker activity to get acquainted and maybe use as a way of dividing up into four or five teams for bowling. Need to get everyone introduced and learn something about them and then mix/match them for bowling teams.

Second: One-day retreat on leadership and self-awareness. We'll be taking a 2 mile hike at 7:30 in the morning and I need some sort of activity to do on the hike that will make it a learning activity.

Any ideas from you creative instructor facilitator types?!?!?!?

Thanks,

Dave

Brother Dave, I've got an idea for the bowling outing which is an ice-breaker and might even help to make your team selection. Give me a call this evening at five zero one-7 two eight -thirty two 13. EAsier to explain than write it out!!!

In past programs of a similar nature we have included wilderness scavenger hunt, orienteering, and rappelling to improve communication ("on belay", etc.) and teamwork while instilling "pride of accomplishment" -- might have rappel all set up so you end up hiking to the site and off they go -- nothing like stepping over the rim as a means of overcoming one's fears...

I can loan you needed equipment (top rope, figure eight, carabineer, and webbing, harness, etc.) if so needed -- just drop me a line. Those that have never rappelled will be talkin' come Monday morning....

 Beer Chugging contest is the top place recommendation. Once on this thread and once via PM!

I'm going with a scavenger hunt on the retreat opening hike this weekend. Put items on a list such as:

Gum Wrapper
Pine Cone
Rock with a hole in it, etc.

May add some fun stuff like trivia questions so folks with phones can google the answers..... What is Lindsey Lohan's jail cell number.... What was on Herb Tarlick's coffee mug, etc., etc.

I attended an off-road rally this last winter with Harry Jalepeno and they had a pretty creative scavenger hunt. Funniest item on the list was:

A piece of wood material at least 20 inches in diameter and 4 foot long....

Didn't realize the brilliance of the organizer's until we pulled back in with our items and saw the pile of fire wood that had been gathered for them by the participants!

For the bowling party I'm thinking some variation on a rock/paper/scissors tournament with the winners getting to chug their beer! Should make the bowling a lot more entertaining!

Thanks,

Dave

That one is tough...............

Herb Tarlick's coffee mug, common now! What was on his mug should be taught in all of the Natural State's public skrewls!

Anybody know? I'll bet Gordon K does, he's kind of a Herb Tarlick kind of guy!

Hey Dave this may not be relevant if you are all well acquainted but I went on a big raft trip a month ago & the cool way we got to know names is made a big circle & went around the circle & you said your name & what you "brought on the trip" one item that started with your first name. Then the next person repeated the person(s) behind him in order & added to the list & it kept going around until the last person had to repeat everyone's first name & their "item". I was Mike & I brought the "medicine"

Heck of a way to learn names quickly. I thought it was pretty cool.

If you are doing coffee mugs, get one or some of the Ozark Cafe's -

"Drink our coffee - do stupid things faster with more energy"

and I have some gear you can borrow if you need it - ropes, biners, harnesses, super 8's, prussic cord, webbing, gloves, etc.

just call or email. 479-seventwoone -niner onezero one.
