Need info on tandem canoe for Buffalo overnighters

Post by Liz Caldwell » Sun Jun 20, 2010 3:32 pm

Mike and I are researching tandem canoes for overnight trips on the Buffalo. I remember some wonderful discussions on these, but can't locate them using the search function. One in particular included an indepth comparison by Cowper. It may have been longer ago than I thought, and therefore no longer accessible on the board.

We want a 16' tandem that can handle light whitewater that is not too slow, but not too tippy. Any recommendations?

I have a 16' Mohawk Intrepid. I have taking it down many rivers for multi-day trips. I bought it from some friends of mine that outfitted it for ww and they took it down the Natahala and I think a few other ww rivers.

I have a 17 foot old town tripper that we use for overnighter and fishing. This is my second one after the 1st got stolen. Really stable with a heavy load and turns as good as shorter boats. I think the load max is something like 1200 lbs. It is also really not the heavy at like 70ish pounds. I can load it by my self on top of a 3/4 ton truck.

I'd second the 16' Mohawk Intrepid for your short list. I used to have a Wenonah Aurora 16, fast, but found it a bit too tippy for my taste/skill level. A fishing friend has a Mohawk which feels to have more "wiggle room."

I like my 16 foot Bell Yellowstone. And of course you can use it whenever you want to.

I agree, the Mohawk Intrepid 16 is a stable boat, but with enough rocker to maneuver through class II and III whitewater.
Paddle on,

yup, I've been paddling my buffalo right along side my friends intrepid for a few years now and there really isn't any significant advantage when comparing the two. If you plan on using the boat 10+ times a year, just don't get a royalite version of the intrepid, it's a hair lighter but I've noticed significant wear on the bottom of his compared to mine.

the new Two Brothers Canoe Arkota is also a very, very solid boat. It's just a hair bit more tipsy than the buff or intrepid, but man! that extra rocker on the bottom is awesome!

and all of these boats can handle good whitewater, especially going solo

Thanks to everyone for the input. We decided to buy Gordon's Bell Yellowstone after he made us an offer we couldn't refuse! We doubt we'll use it for more than Buffalo camping trips, so it seemed to fit the bill. We had borrowed it from Gordon last fall for a trip, and the test run went fine.
