Round mt is cool off hwy 7. Passes the site of a wwII plane crash.
Lost Valley is a must.
A few ways in to the goat trail and hemmed in hollow.
Indian creek? I have on the list but have not done
If you are looking for more "off beaten" follow any creek up or down from the river
You sure this is on the right channel?

Hey we have ALL the good hiking in Newton county :poke: BUT Round Top is now closed indefinitely due to a continuing landslide at that point. Lost Valley is beautiful, you can hike from the Ponca low water bridge to Steele Creek (about 2 miles one way), Hideout Hollow out of Compton is a really neat place, Hemmed-in-Hollow is steep but well worth the effort, and Glory Hole on hwy. 21 north of Fallsvile. All of these are great places to see. For more info see "Arkansas Hiking Trails" by Tim Ernst. Enjoy.

Everyone seems to have left out Hawksbill Crag an easy half-day hike with numerous side tracks. If you follow the unmarked path down to the bottom of the valley from Halley Falls there are two more really nice waterfalls you can bushwack to without too much trouble.

Alum Cove is also worth a visit even though the trail is only 1.1 miles long. It is very scenic and close enough to Jasper to get to for an afternoon picnic.

A little further away but still within reasonable distance is King's Bluff/Pedestal Rocks, 2 loops totaling 4.4 miles with plenty of bluffs, undercuts, views and side tracks to explore.

Since I am hurrrying up and waiting at the moment, I thought I'd toss in a couple more shots of a recent walkabout in the Richland area. Been in there a couple of times recently and this time around the creek was running at the vicinity of 60-70 CFS. In the shot above of Lower Screw-up the Creek was running around 120 CFS. I have always wanted to see some of the rapids at lower levels to see what what was under them. Finally got around to it! As awesome as the Richland is at runnable levels, it takes on a different and beautiful personna at low levels as well!

The Creek:

This one causes a few headaches at boatable levels:
