I am from here and do know that Crooked Creek flows through Yellville, and that the Buff is south of Yellville. I was curious as to whether or not anyone knew of any play spots, you know, a wave or hole to playboat in. Crooked doesn't have any play from Pyatt to Yellville city park, and as far as I know, there isn't any play on the Buffalo anywhere. I'm staying here for a few weeks and was wanting to do a little boating while here. I've seen below the dam and I can't remember any waves there. As soon as they release it goes over the rocks to the point where it's washed out.

There is a big hole downstream of the railroad bridge piling on the White River adjacent to the White River Campground near Cotter. At the high flows we are having now, it looks like a keeper and may be dangerous??

There is one spot on Crooked Creek that you can play on if the water is up a little. If you are going to the snow access, instead of turning left on the last dirt road keep going straight and park by the tracks about 50 feet away from the turn. You can walk down to the creek from there, and just upstream is about the only place I know that will produce any kind of play waves.

Hey man, I do not know anyone good play waves except at very high levels. There is a good creek wide play wave about a 1/4 to 1.2 a mile above the bridge at the park, but the creek has to be about four foot over the slab. you prob know where I am talking about.

That wave above the Yelleville park has some potential at lower flows too, maybe even at the current level. I went from Kelly's Slab to the park about two months ago on sit-on-tops fishng with a couple buds. Never boated that section and came around the corner (in pitch black mind you, we had put on kinda late) to the sounds of a class II wave in utter darkness. I was suprised by it enough that I can't tell you for sure that it would make a great surf/play wave, but it was big enough that I've been planning to find out as soon as temps get above 45 degrees!

PS I DO NOT recommend playing at Kelly's Slab. Although the pourover/hydraulic there looks like it might be fun at the right level, especially with a friend nearby with a throwrope handy, there is a TON of rebar and broken concrete immediately below the slab. Or at least there WAS. Did they perhaps clean that out when building the conservation center just upstream? That would be nice as I always thought it would be a nice spot to swim at lower levels. It definetly bears some checking into. Could be painful, if not fatal to snag up on some submerged rebar...

If you boat either, I would appreciate a good trip report! I have to drive over that bridge on the way to work every morning and often wonder about that wave..

Ok, so Saturday I did Crooked from the slab to the 14 bridge and it was 3 or 4 feet over the slab. The only good play spot was at the slab, but since I did know about the rebar/broken up concrete and I was solo, I headed on down. The spot just up from the bridge had one surfable wave, with hardly any retention. Decent wave train for wheels but no real play.
Yesterday I went to clabber creek shoals which is just downstream from Rush, and there was a huge bluntable wave. Very nice, albeit a bit to high for optimum retention. Also, there was no eddy service, and once again I was solo so I didn't bring a rope so I couldn't haul myself up river. The gauge was at 8.5 at Harriet. I've heard that it's best from 5-9, so today would probably be great play with eddies in play as well.
It was pretty cool surfing on the lower Buffalo with the huge bluffs behind me. I bet it's even cooler today with a crapload of snow.
