I was invited by the Corp of Engineers on lake ouachita to join them on their annual eagle survey wednesday the 6th.
The count was the best in 5 years with the final count being 55 mature bald eagles and 34 juveniles for a total of 89. I saw 30 myself.
Don't pass up the chance to paddle lake ouachita. I have seen alot of wildlife this winter while paddling my kayak. turkeys ,otters, beavers and
cormorants. Also great blue herons and loons. I counted 18 loons in a group near buckville. They are everywhere on the lake and to hear them singing to each other when it is dead calm is the best.

Great photos. Nicely done. You must have a pretty good zoom lens to get those good close ups.

Thanks for sharing.

Dan, It has been way too long since I have been to Lake Ouachita and Buckville in particular. Maybe before January is done we can have an island camping weekend.
WAIT! I am retired! Every day is Saturday! Anyone up for a weekday overnighter? Weekend will work too.

WAIT again! Two people in particular I would want to be there. Beverly and Dan. They are the Buckville gurus
When can yall go? A perfect time to learn a thing or two about photography. I think this has the makings of an outstanding event.

Weather of course has a veto vote.

Hello Richard!
I would love to paddle with you on lake ouachita. Bring Eric with you and anyone else that will come.
I personally would like to get 6 to 8 people together and split the cost on the big houseboat that are for rent . full kitchen and 4 bedrooms, bathrooms and shower. plenty of room for the boats. I have done this is the past and really enjoyed ourselves.
Hopefully the weather pattern will change for the better. Right now it is toooo cold !!!
Find the coots and eagles are bound to be there also;

Yes, those are lovely. I agree, that green heron image is spectacular. Love the colors. The coots always make me laugh.

Richard! You are retired! I am so happy for you.

Jodi and I did get out on Jan. 1 - 45 degrees and calm. It was beautiful. We didn't see a lot of bird life but we disturbed a napping 10 to 12 point buck about 10 feet from the shore. He let us get a really good look at him before he shook off his nap and ran up the mountain. We also explored Richardson's Bottom, a beaver made cattail marsh just west of Buckville. The marvels of Lake Ouachita are just endless.

Not much for camping in the cold, but for you I would brave it. Unfortunately I am still limited to weekends. Love the idea of one of those big houseboats!

I'm going to Ouchita for any overnight paddle & camp trip the first time this weekend. Any recommendations on starting from the state park vs Buckville?
