Wetlands Tour #5 Bayou DeView

Post by DeBo » Wed Dec 02, 2009 12:50 pm

This trip was supposed to be on H Lake in the South Unit of the White River Refuge but roads to the lake and many other areas there are still under water.

Instead, we will do another trip on a different section of Bayou DeView. This trip will be below Hwy 17; the exact stretch to be determined by water levels on Saturday. This is a beautiful area with lots of really big trees.

We will meet at T'Ricks at the I40 193 Exit at 9:30. The weather is forcast to be clear but cold. Bring your warmest clothes.

Bayou DeView is going to be at a great level on Saturday. The forecast is cold but sunny. We will be able to put in at the Hwy 17 bridge. This a beautiful section of river. Please contact me if you are planning to go.

I plan to be there.

Where does hwy 17 cross BDV? Do you mean 70? Coordinates?

I think I might have done this section once before with Cowper if you put in at 70, which is where we normally take out? It was a gorgeous stretch if it's the same one...

See you all on Saturday. I'll bring some hot cocoa in my thermos!

She really does mean Hwy 17.

N34.93573 W91.24083

Debo is thinking of starting at Hwy 17, going downstream, and OUT to Hickson Lake (where we have started on past trips). This is dependent on the roads to Hickson being open; they were underwater two weeks ago. And it was too LOW to do this yesterday, but the levels are "popping up" right now. Some last-minute water-level assessments will be required, but the stars may in fact be in alignment by Saturday.

Ok - I finally found where hwy 17 crosses BDV - I was looking south, not north. And I can see paddling from there to Hickson Lake...but I don't get what the coordinates are for that you gave?

My bad - coordinates contained a typo, now corrected.

Map study says this trip is over 6 miles; it it is through some of the most spread-out sections, which can be a pain if the water isn't up pretty good. That may be more than we want to bite off with the combo of duck-season late starts + sunset at 4:53 PM + cold day. I'll make sure DeBo factors this in.

We'll also post tonight with a second meeting place for anyone coming from the East, since T-ricks is way "out of the way" for those folks. It will most likely be Apple Lake, VERIFIED coordinates N34.8416 W91.282 (Off Hwy 70, just a hair East of the entrance road to Dagmar)
This spot allows us to check water levels in lower Dagmar and whether or not the roads to Hickson are open, which is a necessary step in finalizing the plan.

Cowper and DeBo, sorry I couldn't make this trip. I had a wreck on tuesday and still have about 8 stitches in my head, so I can't have any fun till I'm all healed. BTW, does anyone have a late 90's to early 2000's mid size import 4x4 suv for sale? A 4Runner or Montero Sport or Land Cruiser or mebbe a Pathfinder comes to mind. I may have to settle for a Cherokee, but its not top of my list. My old Ford is dead...It took a Chevy TrailBlazer hitting me from behind at around 35 mph to kill it, but it can finally rest in peace
I'll be floating again once I'm healed

Water level was a bit lower than we had hoped for, which created some "extra adventure" trying to find our way through the swamp and to the take-out before sunset.

Take-out 8 minutes before sunset. That's about "perfect" in my book...

(I'll try to get some photos up tomorrow)

These are pics both from Maddox Bay/Eagle's Nest Lake and from Bayou de View:

Both were beautiful days, albeit about at least 20 degrees difference in temps!

Actually, maybe it was more like 30 degrees difference in temps!
