landslide in Ocoee gorge

Post by Lupe » Tue Nov 10, 2009 9:31 pm

Whoa - check out this video:

Yikes!!!

I can't help but wonder if the incredible flash flooding that we saw while we were there earlier this year might have contributed to this happening.

Again, YIKES!

That was pretty big, but probably not as big as the one near Richland Campground.

Amazing the timing of this occurrence.

This photo shows the potential for what could have happened if during Ocoee season and people were lined up as usual for the put in.

looks to me like the only option at this point is for them to let us run the dam to put in.

I wonder if they are going to try to get all the rocks and debris out of the river? If not, it may be a whole new river at the put-in. I saw on CNN where they say it might take 3 weeks to clean up. I was guessing it would be longer.

I talked to a couple friends out there, and they said all the rock was on the ramp, so it wouldn't change the rapid much. I told them 4000 cfs would already be moving rocks downstream but they said it was releasing out of the side thingy and not over the top. I hope that rapid changes, theres to much hurtin potential for not very much fun factor. (except the whiteface boof, I love the whiteface boof.)
It could be worse, it could stop raining

I doubt it'll change the carnage factor. The thing that makes Grumpy's so bad is how shallow it is versus the fast moving water and all the rocks sticking up. I'm guessing if anything it will be even worse now that there are MORE rocks just waiting to have a nice loving relationship with you
